Don't pay inactive crew members

I only ever have one NPC crew pilot at a time, because they take 10% of my income regardless of wether I use them or not. I feel 10-15% is quite high for what they do, but only paying them when we use then would be a lot better

What this forum needs is a list of already posted suggestions. I agree with your suggestion and it has been posted several times already.

In the 'real' world, why would that pilot then stay with you...?

Right, that's why my proposal would be to introduce a lowered 'standby fee'.
After all your crew stays ready to hop in your ship 24/7...
Maybe a third of the active profit share.
Might also encourage cmdrs to train more than just one crew member...

OR... FD could allow players to use the other crewmembers to man the second fighter and the turrets! How'bout Dah?

Even if it's just in solo mode, or if their turreted accuracy is lower than that of a player, it still would be kinda cool to "not" have them get paid to sip coffee.

Althought... My guess is that they get paid regardless because they have to sleep in the buffer of an intergalactic crewman teleporter and that's not a fun thing. Computers in Elite are so old style, sometimes a pop-up makes you spawn with an atrocious little commercial tune in your head...

I think a flat fee would be better, say 20k per month.

A flat fee would certainly be more realistic and usually I'm all for realistic but from a gameplay perspective I'm afraid it makes more sense for them to take a share.
With a flat fee, how would you determine the amount?
For the most players 20k per month would be nothing.
And that's the problem with a flat fee. It's either a joke for cmdrs with hundreds or thousands of hours of gameplay or it's too high for newer players and those who don't have very much time to play. It would even drain the credits of players with months of game abscence and potentially, if unlikely, leave them bankrupt...

In that case they should get double time on Sundays and time and a half after 7 pm (local time).

:D A nice presentation on why it is not worth the bother to make NPC pay anywhere near RL. There is just too much hassle. Next NPCs will be on sick leave for two weeks.

Just make it simple enough for a game, dammit. And consider that there are a lot of moments where we don't need NPCs and will not tolerate dead weight.

As you say, it's a game. And we know the rules so we play by them making decisions based on that. Or we could ask for a WIN switch.
For me one of the joys of Elite is having to make decisions. Lets keep it that way. :)

If you dont like having to pay that elite fighter jock, fire that fighter jock.
The price to pay is very fair if you want to keep an elite jock on standby. If you dont like it you can hire and fire as required.

This. A NPC in your copilot seat should get full pay from things they actually help with. And crew on standby should get 1%.

And since they only help with fighters (?) they should only get paid from bounties. For anything else (as far as I can tell) they're just sitting there warming the seat.

If thats what you want them to do, warm seats, you're the employer.
FD fighter jock system is fine as is.
Cake and eat it.

I think your opinion here is in the minority. NPC hire mechanics are extraordinarily basic and I'm certain most of us would like them developed further.
