Sandbox with railroading as the primary mean of accessing content.
I am at a loss of words.

That concept of a sandbox feels arguable. Most have tickboxes, even if not explicit. The difference tends to be that the player has the ability to determine which ones are important and the means to get them.I dont think you understand.
This is a sandbox were you play as the pilot you want to be within the elite universe.
It has no end game or silly objectives to fill checkbox style , therefor its a sandbox , the engineers are just a way to add optional risky customisable options to your ship.
If Elite is not a sandbox because engineers not being to your taste does that mean EVE is not a spaceship game because you cant fly the ship with a joystick?

In its early days... yeah it was cool.
Then they ruined the lore and made anyone able to be a jedi
I agree many sandboxs are different but I would not call WOW or ESO a sandbox because half the content becomes pointless once you level up and you cant be who you want to beThat concept of a sandbox feels arguable. There is also typically some level of end game, but that's highly variable as well. Usually it's just the best/hardest content available in each category. Some lasting depth to latch on to. Though this is also largely my opinion of a sandbox.
I haven't played ESO or gotten very far in WoW. I would still qualify WoW as a themepark MMO from what I have played though. It's not exactly a set forward motion, but there is clear progression towards the typical heroes journey there. This and EvE are the only sandboxes I've really played for any length. They feel very different from each other (and I have to agree with the relative lack of depth this has compared to EvE), but still fit the sandbox bill IMHO because of the freedom to define how you progress and what you progress towards, engineers being somewhat of an exception since the seem to require you to go a bit of everywhere as a whole. Feels like the "guided tour" feature that a sandbox is not.I agree many sandboxs are different but I would not call WOW or ESO a sandbox because half the content becomes pointless once you level up and you cant be who you want to be

Of course we don't understand. We were waiting for you, oh messiah, to guide us to the right path.
