Don't try to ram in a hauler !

To CMDR Backer ###### ... don't try to ram a Cobra with full shields up in a hauler .. as I demonstrated two "Rams" from me = Ship explosion .. not even a scratch on my cobra .. as fun as it may be to ram people (I had fun ramming you :D) pick your battles ..

The hauler is an extremely fragile ship. Slow speed, bad shields and no defence/attack capability's.
Its like a cargo container whit a lawn mower engine fitted in the back.

I really understand why people shoot at it in the game, as its an easy target practise.

Perhaps the guy thought he had a Lakon when he scratched your paint :D

Haha, I wondered how hard these Cobra's are.

It does not make sense to me. I would at least expect such a freighter to have above average shielding considering the fact fact there is very little else it can do to protect itself.

Agreed, it is silly to build a freighter which can transport lots of (expensive) cargo, and no good shields.
I understand it isn't a gunship, so no big weapons, but in a hauler you're like a sitting duck.

Agree. I was surprised my self when I bought it, that it was so bad. Only good thing whit it is the 16 ton cargo but its also an invite for pirates to easily kill it. Even a starter sidewinder whit loaned weapon can kill it quite easily.

I hope they change it somehow so it become a valid ship. I would like to se an improved speed of it close to an eagle and better shields. After all its a small ship and a cargo ship so it shud be focused around surviving and not fighting.

But maybe it can be good to use as a mining ship. Fit a mining laser and go out in a ring system and harvest precious metal :)

I will be avoiding this ship then.

I fly a hauler for a few hours now and I call it the "Sir Robin", because with it, the best way is to boldly run away.

When supercruising, keep 4 pips on the engine and 2 pips on the systems, don't need weapons. If interdicted, full throttle and boosts while doing spirals using roll and pitch. Don't try to be fancy with lateral thrusters they slow you down. So far no pirate has been able to even take my shield to half before I'm gone.

The only thing that can be dangerous are the Station Assassins, but so far, I've had only one of those encounters in a quite a few hours.
But... I started with my hauler at 688cr, now 15 trading runs later, I'm at 14,865cr and that includes keeping 3,000cr in reserve for insurance and re-start capital.

Fun to ram? Hmmmm...Maybe Destruction Derby is more your sort of game?

I LOVE Destruction Derby :D... This was just some retaliation .. the guy came at me for no reason (at full speed) other than I was stationary (and before you ask I am not from WHSmiths), and rammed me ... so I showed him how the error of his ways in kind:) ...

It's odd...

I've had a Cobra ram me in an Eagle (remember the ones with paper shielding?) and smash itself to bits.

There is supposed to be a mechanic where the rammer takes more damage than the ramee - how it calculates that I don't know (relative speed, location of impact, comparative headings?). If that is implemented then it would account for why the Hauler came so badly second assuming Luniticisi was trying to avoid the collision.

I guess the only way to test it is have a Cobra ram a Hauler and see what happens?

Nope, what happened is I was just sitting in space .. and then I saw a PC on my radar moving directly toward me, then I heard his engines (I hadn't moved at all) .. and he came crashing into me ... I took offense and gave chase .. thought about shooting ... but then thought ... "Nah!" .. and boosted into him whilst he was running, twice .. he blew up ... my shields were not even dented ..

So a cobra ramming a Hauler wins

How badly damaged was he from the initial collision though?

As he clearly rammed you first before you "retaliated".

You counter ramming him if his ship was already a mess may have just finished him off.

It would also depend on how many pips to shields I'd guess.

His shields were almost down after the initial "hit" - and I had 4 pip's in shields .. I had to chase him a little while .. but a hauler can't outrun a Cobra (especially when boosting)

I remember DB talking about a game mechanic that they plan to implement (if anybody can find the link they win a virtual gold cannister).

He described the idea of a huge cargo ship with little to no defences, going to a system, and arranging escort from a number of strong fighters to prevent being lynched. As a reward for protection, the fighters would be given either a payment or a portion of the booty.

I think this could be a fantastic game mechanic, once in-game communication is implemented. It would move the game away from pretty simple and repetitive "lone wolf" killing, and into more intelligent, strategic and collaborative play.

So yes, we need these weak-hulled ships to add various gameplay models.

Good! Glad those ramming fools get what they deserve :)

That would figure then. If he was trying to run away from a Cobra, he likely had full pips to engines with 2 at best in shields.

4 pip full shield Cobra vs 2 pip minimal shield Hauler - definite win for the Cobra.

What'd be interesting is if conditions were set up for both ships at full shields and full pips and the Cobra clearly ramming the Hauler - then seeing what the relative damage was.

Today I was rammed several times when docking/undocking and it's a good job I have a joystick with reverse throttle otherwise manuvering would have been very tricky.

I was just rammed in Aulin, the guy was too impatient to get into the station. I was going slow enough to not spin into anything - suffered no damage to sheilds either. Weird.

Maybe the rammer suffers the most (one going the fastest)?
