Engineers Don't understand the process of buying mods from Engineers ?

I finally managed to get Grade 1 access to Felicity Farseer, then had enough other materials etc to buy some kind of update. However it appears if I modify a component some parts of that component may be degraded, and whats this throw of the dice thing when it gives me the chance to 'try again' ?? I think I've upgraded my FSD but not sure what I've done as the process seems overly complicated.

Can somebody please explain in plain English the correct process for using the Engineers Modification facility and what to look out for so I don't make a component worse - thanks

Grind for better ranks with them. tier 1, 2 aren't worth it. 3 is okey and 4 and 5 are good. Personally i would save your materials and grind for tier 5 then only do tier 5 mods.

Welcome to fold of RNGesus.

Yes the throw of the dice can give you bad results.

'Try again' is just that, throw away the current results, spend the materials again and hope for a better dice roll.

Does it cost me with each throw of the dice or is it free until I find a mod worth purchasing.

It costs you with each roll.

The thing with the RNG is that the basic improvement you've asked for (e.g. improved FSD jump range) will happen but just how far improved is variable and the corresponding downsides to that mod' (e.g. extra heat, increased power consumption, etc) are also variable. There's certainly no such thing as getting an FSD (for example) that's simply better but the primary enhancement you've chosen from the list should always happen (I believe). As another example, if you've clicked on a faster recharging shield, I don't think you should ever end up with a slower recharging one.
