General / Off-Topic Dorian is comming!

My thoughts and support goes today to the inhabitants of the Bahamas.

For today, the Bahamas will receive the visit of a very unpleasant visitor. His name... Dorian.

Dorian has been recently classified as a Cat 5 Hurricane, which is the maximum on the Saffir-Simpson scale. It translates on wind speeds of more than 251 Kmh and surges of over 5.5 meters.

To anyone living on the Bahamas and in Florida, take care and hang in there.

The hurricanes are something terrifying and devastating.

They speak of a catastrophic hurricane on the Bahamas and winds at 280 kms/h.

Residents are afraid of rising waters because the Bahamas are flat.

After levelling Abaco islands in north Bahamas, Dorian is on its way to the eastern coast of Florida, where projections show it will go north along the coast all the way up to north Carolina. It should hit West Palm beach this afternoon as a Cat 4 Hurricane. Which means winds up to 250 km/h.

To all people involved that read this, stay safe, stay strong. Hang in there.

Live cam from Lauderdale-by-the-sea. North of Palm Beach. You can already see the monster getting close.

We’re building the wrong types of houses again and again, we really need to stop doing that, if I was in a tornado or hurricane area I would build my house so it could survive even a cat 5-6 hurricane.

As much as I agree with your statement, I must point out that not everybody can afford a house made of concrete, even less so a domed shaped one.

There is a reason as to why wooden houses are so popular in the US. They are cheaper to build and easy to replace. Heck, some companies even specialised in prebuilt houses!

In Europe, most of our houses are made of brick, very few are made out of wood. Even though the new houses are made of cheap materials, the main walls are still made of brick. Why? Beacause they are more resilient! It is more expensive, but it is seen as an investment.

My example was in the upper levels however you can construct a cheap dome concrete house for the same cost as a wood house, it’s just a matter of series production.
