Does Strength-Promoting Exercise Confer Unique Health Benefits? A Pooled Analysis of Data on 11 Population Cohorts With All-Cause, Cancer, and Cardiovascular Mortality Endpoints
Abstract. Public health guidance includes recommendations to engage in strength-promoting exercise (SPE), but there is little evidence on its links with mo

A large scale study on strength training has finally been done, and demonstrates substantial benefit in reducing death rates from all causes.
Here are some takeaways :
- 30 minutes strength training per week is worth 2 and a half hours of "brisk walking" ( edit: for cardiovascular protection, its better than cardio)
- lifting weights/using machines in the gym is roughly equivalent to bodyweight calesthenic type exercises with no equipment at home for mortality reduction
- unlike aerobics, the strength training reduced cancers by around 30%
- maximum benefit comes from doing both kinds of exercise
