Down to last bar of fuel. Any options?

I'm nearly at the end of a long journey of 50 jumps, and have been refuelling enroute happily. However, I now seem to have hit a patch of unexplored systems, with only a couple of jumps now available to me - none of which will get me to anywhere with a proper name (they all just have a designation name/number). They are unexplored, so I don't have a list of planets and stations in them! Is there any way of telling if a system is likely to contain a station? Am I out of options? :)

Do you have a fuel scoop? Most stars can be scooped from:http://lavewiki.com/fuel-scoop

Otherwise some indirect ways are looking at population or trade routes.

Not sure if the old classic of sending a distress signal works - someone used to come and offer you fuel but I've not tried it since beta

Go to the galaxy map, and use the filter that shows factions. If a system is aligned with a faction (Federation, Imperial, Alliance or independent), chances are, it has a station or outpost.

Do you have a fuel scoop? If yes then look for a K, G, B, F, O, A or M type star (you can see the type on map) and scoop away.

If not you could either post where you are (the system) and someone may be able to help tell you where nearest stations are, or else you could just take your chances and take short jumps (much more efficient) and try to find a way to a station.

There is also the option of someone comiong to rescue you with extra fuel, there is a thread about that somewhere on this forum but i can't remember the name of it.

Check the galaxy map in "map" mode, filter for allegiance. If a system shows a colored dot, it is inhabited, so you are most likely to find an Outpost at the very least. If you are entirely surrounded by grey dots... do what FuzzySpider said.

Seriously, the Fuel Rats are one of the coolest ideas I've seen in any game.

HailVectron, if you find you've jumped to a system and you have no fuel left to jump anywhere else, and you have no fuel scoop and there are no stations, you'll either have to self-destruct, or call the Fuel Rats for help.

Oh, and uh - this may be a hell of a time to find out, but managing your fuel is part of the game. Most of us have had a horrible moment where we realise we've screwed up. Many of us have ended up self-destructing.

The lessons to take from these moments are:

If you're going into unknown space, have a fuel scoop.

Only O, B, A, F, G, K and M class stars are scoopable. A good mnemonic to remember them is 'Oh Be A Fine Girl, Kiss Me'.

Learn to fuel scoop safely.

If you don't have a fuel scoop, you will have to plan your route to make sure there are stations at points before your fuel tank runs empty. You also need to check whether these stations have 'REFUEL' as one of the services they provide (not all do). Even with a fuel scoop, you ought to plan your route to make sure you come to the right kind of stars before you run out of fuel. You don't have to plan the whole thing at once - I find it easier to do it in stages as I go.

Learn how to call the Fuel Rats if you do screw up :)

"KGB Foam" for life! :p

(In case you missed it - KGB FOAM is another mnemonic to remember the valid star classes... I personally found it a lot easier to remember - shorter and somehow memorable because it sounds so silly...)

EDIT:

Call the fuel rats. We know you want to do it

That so needs to be part of the game. Some sort of distress beacon I mean. ;)
