Download version DRM free?

Sorry if it's been answered before, but search wouldn't let me use "DRM".

I can only afford the £30 pledge for the download version, but my PC is not connected to the internet. I was just wondering if I'll be able to download it at work, take it home on a USB stick, and play it on my PC. Or will I need the boxed DRM free version for that (which is £60)?

To be more precise, the installable part of the game (the download, CD/DVD etc) is all DRM free.

The bit where you are 'tied' for want of a better phrase is your login. That is what you are *really* paying for. I should also mention that FD have already said that abuse/sharing of logins between people could result in a penalty (ban) of some kind. So what they're saying is the login is your license and not to be shared.

Hope that helps.

And what about single player offline?

Welcome to the forum,

The game will not include DRM. However there will be server authentication when you connect for multiplayer and updates and when you synchronise with the server.

Hope that helps. :D

I think you can install the game and play off line. But if you want to play on line you have to connect with your user :)

Most likely you will need to authenticate once with the servers to validate the game and be able to play offline - whilst no actual confirmation has been said by FD it's what I would do at the very least.

As I recall this question was an important one for Liqua - I'm pretty sure he's said on other threads that he checked and you could play totally solo offline.

Can't reference it but perhaps he'll pop in later to confirm.

Wow, thanks for all the answers!

I'd have no intention in playing it online at all. Just offline, single player mode. I was just worried because I've been screwed by Minecraft and STEAM games before, where you actually need to be online once just to "validate" the game, and unless you are, you can never play it.

So it seems this will be possible for me, with just the download version, which is great news. If I can get that confirmed 100%, then I'll place my pledge within the next day.

Will updates/patches, and later DLC be available for download in the same way? I.e. will I be able to download them on one computer and transfer them to my offline gaming PC?

Congrats on raising so much cash BTW, pretty unbelievable! Used to play Elite on my Commodore 64 back in the 80's, so looking forward to playing the updated version again soon!

If you're using a laptop couldn't you go to a friends who has the internet or somewhere like an internet cafe (if they still exist), and do your one time validation there? Once validated you can put Steam offline and you'd never need worry about having to be online again to play your activated games.

If you're using a desktop its a bit more of a chew on, but still doable if you're desperate to play those games :D

A question I am really interested in being answered is about the 'Premium Collectors Boxed edition' that I will be receiving once the game is released.

As I will be part of the Beta test's I am assuming that I will download the main game in January (if all goes to plan) and that will be my "Digital download" of the game, so by release day I would have already created my account 'DRM free' and be playing on that downloaded version of the game..

So now to the killer question ..

As I will also be receiving the 'Premium Collectors Boxed edition' (and this question also applies to the people that are getting the 'Standard' boxed version of the game) I would assume that all of the people who receive a 'boxed' version of the game, on top of their 'Digital downloaded ' version .. would essentially have two 'Separate' copy's of the game, as the boxed version would basically be the same as the version you buy in the shops.
So you could either give one of your copy's to a friend to create an account for themselves or create a second account for yourself.

Is there any info on this as I cannot see how both could be tied to one account ... this question has been asked but never answered accurately (as far as I can see)... much appreciated :)

there,s only a difference in how you install the game.
we all probably get a unique activation key.
this key will connect to one game account.
so for this you will need to be on line.
thus it doesn't matter how many boxes you have , you will still have one activation key.
unless you have a second pledge trough the gift system.
hopefully I'm wrong but it feel pretty sure about it.
this system is often used by high end software producers like maya for example.
they use it for licence lease.
witch means the key can become invalid over time.
this is what worries me a bit.
not that I suspect frontier developments to invalidate the key but,
what if the service stops over time?
I played Frontier elite for many years.
this time it won,t be any different.
now don,t panic over this , often trough updates it all is given free.
its the best way to prevent copying.
there's all-so the possibility that with out the key only off line play is possible.
so with all the bugs that where not found before release.
because for updates you will need this key.

The Alpha and Beta will probably be different from the actual release code. I would expect a complete new installation of the game, inc any serial key.

I would like this answered by someone from Frontier, as I cannot envisage a 'Boxed' version of the game without it's own unique CD key (if that's the way they go)

If the Idea is that I get One cd-key and two versions of the game ... then what is the point of getting two versions of the game in the rewards. Fair enough, the collectors box is, well, just that ... tee-shirt, book, star map whatever, the standard 'box' however is a box with a disk in it that is completely useless, unless I have no internet connection for the digital download.
So I really cannot see this being the case.

The publisher would be making the 'Standard' boxed editions from the rewards ... a unique item, as they would have to produce them without cd keys, So a limited run of boxed games .. then print the mainstream version with cd keys.... all of this makes no sense to me ... So I am still with the belief that anyone who pledged to the level of two copy's of the game will get two SEPARATE copy's of the game ... until Frontier say otherwise.

Just my thoughts.. which could have probably been expressed better .....

Oh and a side note CD-keys on 'DRM - free games' are ALWAYS cracked .. just saying:eek:

I think it also depends on game manufacture. I think I payed for one game that just gave a Key. No CD or anything. I don't remember what game it was.

The whole download on another machine things might be tricky. I'd suggest waiting till the game is out to check if this is feasible. I'd also suggest waiting till after release to do the download + move thing. Once it's on your offline computer you'll never be able to update it and thus certain important bugfixes (there are always bugs) may be missed. If you get the version about a month or two after release then it's likely to be more stable.

I honestly believe many companies waste too much time and money trying to stop piracy. I've never known for any popular game not to get hacked, you see people talking all the time about torrent sites, spend a few minutes googling or looking at these sites and you see every game in different formats too, not just PC. Hackers and pirates will always break the security, it may take them a few days or a few weeks, but they do it. So in the end the only people that can get effected by security is the normal everyday user.

Online players will have to log in to a server to start their session, no doubt. So all the security should be at Frontiers end for this. Offline players might have to validate their serial key once to be able to play, but even that can be hacked.
