Downloaded at Epic but desire to buy it at Steam

Hello,

Recently, as many others, embarked Elite some days ago taking advantage of Epic release. However, despite might be shocking I'd like to purchase it via Steam now as has a huge discount as well, sitting at 6,24 EUR currently.

Why? Well, two reasons; first, I'd like to support developers somehow and 6 EUR isn't a huge deal. Secondly, I never use Epic (just I did for Metro Exodus). Question is...all I did already via Epic, once I start game now in Steam is linked to my Frontier account or I will miss all progress of these past days? Will I be able to use my commander and current assets if I start Elite vía Steam? So, in sum, if what prevails is not where you're "launching" or storing the game itself but you Frontier account. I assume once you launch at Steam will require to link it to your Frontier account ergo...your progress attached to it so I am not loosing anything...

Thanks in advance,

characters are not transferable between accounts, at least by us mere mortals. fDev will transfer accounts between console and PC but if memory serves this is just credits and not assets.. no harm in asking support if its possible between Epic and the regular accounts

if you want to support fDev by given them money just buy some Arx and buy a paint job or somehting

So, If I purchase and download at Steam, I'll have to create a new Elite and Frontier account from the scratch? I mean...from my point of view, it doesn't have any logic. Frontier account is independent from store you bought it afterall.

Nothing to stop you linking an existing fdev acct to your new steam install - though in that case you end up with 1 CMDR and 2 copies of the game. But since the Epic one was free I guess it doesn't matter (and I'm sure Support could break that link).

ofc if you really want to support fdev you should wait until the game is back at full price :)

far as im aware its one ED character per frontier account.. possibly platform
you purchased the game from Epic but you need the frontier account for the character

Exactly, I would not loose "cash", one was for free so no harm done.

When you install there are 2 options - new acct or link to existing acct - choose the 2nd and you should be fine. You can't easily Console <-> PC, but can between PC vendors.

That's what I tought...well, I already bought it and is installing, in case it fails you can always ask for a refound. Once I get to account loging step I will come back here and show the results, might be useful for someone in the future I hope.

I mean I would not loose too much, but here's what I might loose. I know...I know, I am still a noob.

Done.

I fully migrated to Steam. I didn't do anything special. Installed at Steam (not running it), uninstalled Epic copy, defragged disk, close both Steam and Epic. Run Steam and load it, automatically my Frontier account loaded. I just reopned Elite and there it is, my Cobra MkIII docked just where I left it yesterday.

So, for anyone interested in the future. Yes, is doable.

Alright, I'm thoroughly confused now. If this works just fine, why does this support page adamantly advise against it?
Copies of Elite Dangerous purchased from the Epic Game Store MUST be run through the Epic launcher, as detailed in this FAQ. DO NOT LINK YOUR FRONTIER ACCOUNT TO STEAM. This will block your game access, and will NOT add the game to Steam.

If it's possible, I definitely want to get it on Steam instead. I use a Steam controller wherever possible, and it's just not playing nice with ED on Epic right now.

Thanks @Amaiur for reporting your result. That is helpful.

It seems to me that there's a lot of confusion over Epic-acquired ED, both for players who haven't played before and for existing players who were hoping to have an alt-account (not link their existing one). Probably the best set of instructions that I have seen reading these forums was created by Arsen Cross. It's worth looking over...

It works ! Thanks !
Before run on steam, you need to link your steam account in your frontier profile (https://www.frontierstore.net on the "partner keys" menu).
No scruple to buy the next dlc on steam :) . And thanks Frontier for this amazing game.

By my experience, you should get the game from the Frontier Store directly. To FDEV, other customers more or less seem to be second-class customers, especially when purchasing on the Epic Games Store. Bad integration, game permanently relies on the Epic Store for license validation (instead of caching the purchase on the linked Frontier account). Aside from this, if yor buy on Steam, a part of your purchase goes to Valve, the rest goes to FDEV. If you want to support the Developers, buy at the Frontier Store. They also have sales sometimes.

but with the Epic give away they still pay frontier the full price for each free player they enrole, its not like frontier get nothing, the cash comes from epic not the player. unfortunatly Epic then make money from any other game or expac you buy from them. and from my experience the Epic launcher is a lot worse than steam.. it takes more than twice as long to load for a start, probably one of the reasons they need to bribe people to use it

I kept getting kicked on the Epic version, no problems on Steam thus far. It is really annoying they're validating on the launcher vs somehow registering the purchase on your account.

Epic may pay FDEV for the free Elite Dangerous copies, but you can bet they are getting a massive discount!

I think we can agree that giving ED away for free or heavily discounted now is nothing more than a try to get more players into the game before the next PAID expansion becomes available. The income from that expansion will earn FDEV a lot of fresh money. More players now = more expansion purchases next year.

Alright, I took the leap too.
  1. Closed steam
  2. Uninstalled from Epic
  3. Closed Epic
  4. Install on Steam
  5. Link account on https://www.frontierstore.net
  6. Run game.
Works like a charm.
I had to unlink Epic store and then Link steam - even after that i was getting error when trying to login for some reason. closed and reopened steam and i was logged in. loaded the game and everything is as it was - all my settings for HOTAS adn graphics and sounds were all pulled in as well. adn the best part? I NO LONGER HAVE SCARLET KRAIT DISCONNECTS WHEN I JUMP OUT OF A STATION.

thanks for this Commanders - much appreciated!
