Ships DPS and ROF

Does "DPS" stands for "Damage per Second"?
Il yes, how DPS is calculated?
It is somehow considered the time required to reload the weapon, or is taken into consideration only the number of shots per second?
Thanks in advance and I apologize if the question was silly...

Yes, it is counted from longer period of shooting and it accounts for cooldowns, reloading and everything else.

DPS is simply to imagine how much damage you'll be dealing on average over longer period of time.

For example Plasma accelerator deals huge amount of damage per shot, but shoots slow, which means its overall DPS is similar to beam laser.

Thanks for the info!
And how is possible that a 2D/G Frag Cannon may have a ROF of 5,3/s, if it can fire only three shoots and then has to recharge?
Is there the possibility that DPS value of 9 is overestimated?

Well, first, don't trust the game. It shows bars in stead of hard numbers and it can be misleading.

ROF simply tells you that this gun is "theoretically" capable of firing 5,3 rounds per second. But in reality there are reloads and that's why we have DPS.
You can check this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=140240 and there are others.

There is an added complexity, because every weapon has different DPS against shields and against hull but you'll get the idea.
