General / Off-Topic Dr Who, the Capaldi years!

Dr Who, the Capaldi years coming up... He'll be darker; we know that much...

Should be fun.... I'm just remembering when Matt Smith started and the doubts I had about him and now look at how we missed him when he left.... Hope Capaldi has a similar effect (perhaps more in the Tom Baker vein....

Let the ride begin! :D:D:D

Squeeeeeee.....!

Matt Smith as the Dr was only slightly better than Sylvester McCoy! The only thing that it had going for it was Amy Pond. Oh, and Clara - who originally had a great surname (Oswin) before they changed it :(

As for the first episode of the new series... bit disappointed to be honest... not with all of it... there was some good bits, but at other moments it seemed more like a "Carry On Dr Who" movie.

Will give it a few episode to settle down though... :)

I do kind of agree, but then again the first episode after a regeneration isn't usually great. You have to go through the whole thing of the Doctor being confused and finding his new identity and the companion having to get used to a new person thing. The trailer for the next episode looks promising though.

Yep, I hate the silly Doctors. Ended up skipping most of his run.

For me the Matt Smith years were spoilt by Moffat being too clever for his own good and making us have to watch the series at least three times to get to grips with all the meanderings to and fro... very off-putting!

Moffat certainly likes his season story arcs...

Capaldi was good, the story was...uneven, brilliant in parts, ponderous in others.

Hopefully next week it'll achieve some consistency.

I find most (all?) of the episodes set in Victorian London with the alien sleuths rather silly. The worst parts of last night's episode though were the fight scenes which were so unconvincing and wooden.

I'm afraid that I've not found any of the stories in the "new" Dr.Who era to be terribly deep and thought provoking, and certainly not hard SciFi. They are merely romps with all ideas of physics and the real world thrown out of the window. (Yes, some of the older ones were too, especially during the John Pertwee years.)

At least with Peter Capaldi the probability of episodes comprising lots of running about and contrived chases may be fewer.

At least the daleks are back next week.

I am not a fan of Moffat either. Too many plot twists and chasms to cross usually. Saturday nights appeared a bit simpler.

I dont mind The Doctor being a bit mad or badly dressed, but he should be in control - after all he is The Doctor. I felt at times in this episode I was watching Mr. Bean.

I ain't watched any Dr Who since Tom Baker, so prompted by the comments, I went looking for the new theme music. I reckon the late Delia Derbyshire would not have been impressed. She was amazing - the goddess of early electronic sound!

A clip I saw went something like this:

Dr: Who are you again?
Clara: I'm your carer.
Dr: That's right! You're my carer! She cares, so I don't have to.

Classic Capaldi.. :D

Looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the show. Mixed feelings about the season opener, but hey ho.

Yeah, it wasn't great, but that's okay; I'm sure it will improve. None of the Doctors had a particularly good first appearance, not even the great Tom Baker (IMHO of course, I'm sure many will disagree!). But we do know that Capaldi is a fantastic actor, I don't think it will take too long for him to settle in and for us to get accustomed to him. There's great potential there for sure.
