Yesterday, I purchased this game as well as the Metro Redux Bundle.

Playing on Xbox. There is a Steam release but I'm not sure how well it runs. Xbox performance is excellent though. Very short load screens and the like.

The game is a brilliant hybrid of JRPG, Dark Souls and Elder Scrolls. In that it has JRPG levelling, loot, and party mechanics. Dark Souls combat. And Elder Scrolls exploration.

The plot is enthralling, in my humble opinion, but I like over the top stuff.

Character creation is the best I've ever seen. You can make pretty much anyone. It's not just face customisation. It's the whole body. You can make a morbidly obese character if you so desire.

Brilliant game. Highly recommend.

Okay, my love of this game has only increased.

I have never so much felt like I was an intrepid quester. Today, I was walking a road, when my main follower shouted "Griffin!", and there, in the skies, was a gigantic beast, with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion.

It came swooping upon our party. I pulled out my trusty longbow which I only acquired earlier that (in-game) day. My mage enchanted our weapons with flame, and I began to shoot at the beast's wing. For a long time, it relentlessly charged at myself and my warriors. Luckily, the mage was an adept healer. Eventually, I managed to damage the wings, and it fell right out of the sky. My warriors immediately set upon the creature with blade, and I grabbed hold of its leg, slashing with my daggers.

Eventually, after about twenty minutes, we succeeded in killing the Griffin. It was brutal. I had to postpone my quest, to resupply my party with curative items.

But man... That was awesome.

I've also since trained in all four vocations (classes) that allow for the use of bows. There are three types of bow in this game: short, long & magic. They each have very different purposes, but Catharina is now an extremely versatile heroine.

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. Am I correct in thinking that Dark Souls isn't really much of an open world, rather a series of dungeons?

Nothing wrong with that of course.

Dark Souls is sort of a hybrid in the sense that while you're in a series of "dungeons" they are all cleverly connected to one another and form a whole world. The DS series stands pretty tall in my gaming library.

Oh okay, I see. But I guess there aren't really any open plains or whatnot? For me that's a big part of DD. Feels like a LotR movie.

I haven't played DD yet, but no, Dark Souls doesn't have what you would consider an Open world. Don't let that turn you away from picking it up and trying it, though. The world and level design is brilliant, the creatures are amazing, the lore is awesome, the bosses are off the charts and no other game can quite make you feel like such a death dealing bad .

With that said, my impression is that comparisons between the two games is a bit unfair, and that while they share some similarities they aren't playing tennis on the same court at all. I have DD, just been too busy to dig into it.

Fair play. I happen to be looking for some new games on Xbox, so I might just pick it up.

The only gripe I have with DD is the repetitive voice acting when you walk along an area it seems there are points where they HAVE to say the same phrase, this gets annoying real fast.

If it wasn't for that repetitive voice acting it would be amazing :)

Is DD open world in the same sense that TW3 is? Are there quests & side quests with decent stories?

The game pales in comparison to TW3.

Actually, while I consider DD enthralling, because I am indeed enthralled... It's actually pretty goofy.

But the battles really are epic. And the questing certainly feels like you're in a LotR movie. Today I was traversing a mountain road... Let me tell you, when a cyclops appeared round a corner... Oh man.

Or the battle against a golem! That was tough, as I was set up terribly for it. Luckily I remembered to bring my daggers... All other weapons were useless.

I beat the game. But without spoiling anything... There's a way the game links all your playthroughs together.

Roughly how long was your playthrough?

Ooh... About? 20-30 hours? But I pretty much did only the main story. This time, I'm going to do EVERYTHING. And level up all my vocations.

Not to mention about half the dungeons I have not completed.

I'm far from done yet. Very far.

Oh, I won't say much... But there's a mega-boss shared by all players. (An offline version is available, but he offers less rewards for killing him offline, to promote the sharing of main followers)

That boss... Well... He gets stronger every time a player kills him... And he's on his 39th run.

Also, New Game+ offers even more quests. You really are supposed to play several times.
