Dreamwalk Expedition - A Long Awaited Personal Journey

Well, I know that this is far from any records or truly unusual voyages, but the expedition still was adventurous and interesting for me and I want to tell others about it.

Recently my first serious long deep space journey through and around the galaxy has finally concluded: 8-month out of the bubble, half of which are without any docking, about a million light years traveled, and more than 5 billion of income for data. On top of that: first-discovered planter nebula, name in the codex, my own “Reflected Cradle” project completion, a bunch of new POIs for EDSM and lots of rechecked and updated POIs. Actually, I can tell you a lot about the expedition, remembering all funny and bizarre moments, mentioning quirky situations and minor interesting places, but in this case the post will hardly be fully read by anyone, so I will try to be more or less short, skipping non-crucial and monotonous moments of this voyage. Also, if you are interested in my POIs or Reflected Cradle, the former ones are in GMP thread and the latter one has a separate post, not to overload this already big post with more text. There will be just minor mentions of these two when they are needed. Well, enough with the introductions, let’s get to the point!

Prologue

I had an idea of going to Sagittarius A* (Sag), Colonia (Col), other side of the galaxy, Beagle Point (BP) and etc, I think since my 300-400 hours of playing, when I finally decided to dive deep into the game (yeah, my first 200-300 hours I just flew sidewinder and cobra just for fun without getting into details). But I didn’t want it to be just a straight line trip from A to B, I wanted to make it a real voyage and adventure, so I planned an approximate route and started to build the appropriate ship. Though I love DBX and kinda hate flying big ships, because of duration and difficulty of such a long voyage, which I likely would have to perform all alone (and I had to), the only really suitable ship left was Anaconda (conda). All in all, after material grinding and rest of engineers unlocking I finally created my Explorer’s Dream conda. Why was it named like that? Well, cause it’s really an explorer’s dream: the ship has all facilities for long voyages and plus some support function like refueling (yeah, it’s useless in solo voyage, but just as a fact). I’ve also installed 4 SRVs hoping that we would have SRV multicrew by the time this thing flies (but we all know the rest). And yeah… this building happened back in 2017, I’m not really a person who releases the ideas quickly and promptly, but nevermind. I made a test 15k ly 2-week flight to test the ship and it performed greatly, but because of 3.3 and exploration changes news I left it and the idea for nearly a year.

Ship Build (and yes, I’ve maxed the upgrades of the conda when 3.1 engineer update came out)

The Expedition

Objectives Of The Expedition:

Well, in reality, there were none on the start, except Reflected Cradle Project and getting to BP and back more or less alive – most of them were coming to my mind as the expedition unfolded. So, consider this as a list of post factum accomplished goals rather than a preliminarily made sheet of objectives.

  • Visit Colonia, Sagittarius A*, Beagle Point
  • Reach The Void Sector and galaxy edge in it
  • Check and examine all locations for Reflected Cradle Project
  • Visit as many beautiful places on the way as I can
  • Visit as many undefined\unfinished POIs as possible: verify presence (or absence) of old POIs, provide new data on old POIs, provide lacked data on some POIs, provide screenshots on some POIs, check the relevance of the POIs (all in all, help EDSM and GMP as much as I can).
  • Find and submit new POIs for GMP
  • Find and submit POIs in sectors with lack of them
  • Make photos of the best visited spots
  • Land on the highest G planet
  • First-discover each type of stellar body in the galaxy (except Helium Gas Giants and bubble-only classes of White Dwarves)
  • Get 10 000 first-discovered and 20 000 visited systems on EDSM
  • Get Deadly combat rank while being in the black
  • Visit and scan all populated systems around Colonia
  • Unlock Colonia engineers
  • Get into 1 000 000 light years club and 65 000 light years club
  • Go over 4 billion credits on the balance after selling the data

Green Stage

I set off from Jackson’s Lighthouse on January 26 into the unknown not really knowing what intermediate points to visit and not really knowing how much I was going to spend in the black. So I flew to the in the direction of Sagittarius through dark regions. My first solid waypoint was the Cat’s Paw, plus some minor nebulas on the way and landing on 9.7G planet in HD 148937. At that time, though having a EDSM account I was kinda reluctant to use it as a catalog of interesting places because of large amount of points on the map. But later, after reaching Morgan’s Rock in NGC 6188, when their density lowered I started to think, “well why not” and discovered the real codex of galaxy gems, not the mediocre one which FD implemented.

145198
145199

After getting to Cat’s Paw I went in Col direction to Rohini, checking all major nebulas on the way. Not much to tell about things there except big cluster near Omega nebula, station flying above the rings in Lagoon and some occasional anomalies and fine places.

After Rohini it was nearly straight way to Col with vising all notable places on the way. And there were lots of them there: starting from Collection of Wonders and ending with Green Gas Giant. Yeah, most of the systems on the way are already discovered but this doesn’t change the beauty of the spots found there.

All in all, I finally entered Colonia sector on February 24 – took me a month to get there.

Light Blue Stage

After selling the data, unlocking all the engineers and having a rest I continued my journey on March 3. The next waypoint was the very center of the galaxy: the good old Sag. On the leaving I visited 2 green gases and infamous Monde de la Mort near Colonia.

145216
145217

Not much to tell about the stage itself, because it was nearly a straight route, nevertheless I managed to find and submit 3 of my own POIs: Dark Light Rings, Four Suns Earth, and Black Fields. Plus, visited some of the know ones.

145221
145222

I got to the Sag and newly built Explorer’s Anchorage on March 10.

145218

Orange Stage

Well this is an interesting one. Initially it was not planned at all, but after I saw the amounts of wonderful places around the center I made up my mind to fly this circle to look at all of these. Plus, about that time I noticed how many of EDSM POIs have lack of information and decided to help it a bit, checking and submitting info on them. I considered all this to be about 1-1.5 months but it actually lasted for nearly 3 months.

After taking a week-long break from elite it was the time to continue the journey. First of all, I decided to get to the highest and lowest points above\under the Sag to see the whole galaxy around me. And I would say that view there is really breathtaking.

145223
145224

Then I got back to the main plane and headed to Great Attractor, Black in Green and etc. After that I took a detour out of the central region a bit to visit and check some more POIs and while visiting Keelback Rings one in a million probability took place: unintended deep space rendezvous. The funniest thing is that the guy I met had a name: Random Gamer – he was a truly random gamer at that moment. We flew together a bit, did some shots and continued our own ways (sadly not meeting again in the black).

The next stage for me was getting to HL Lupis – a high above the plane difficult-to-get system according to EDSM system. But it was pretty far from the center, so I had to fly a decent route to get there. And this is where the second story of this stage comes. After several hours of flying and hour of climbing I got to the nearest system to HL Lupis and found out that… it was one-way system. Not a difficult-to-get, one way! And why haven’t anybody on EDSM noticed this mistake I dunno. But that’s far from the end, if this was the end I wouldn’t even write about it. On the way back to the disc, being disappointed with the unreachableness, I was lazy to replot the route and broke the rule never to boost from white dwarves – and I think you know what happened: I didn’t manage to handle my conda in the small jet and flew into exclusion zone. This was one of the scariest moments of all my pilot career: I could lose more than 3 weeks of exploration and be teleported back to Sag. Fortunately, I made it out of the jet alive but, unfortunately, with heavily damaged ship. I had more than half of the stage ahead and it was obvious that if I continue I could not make it to the civilization back. So I made a decision to fly directly back to the Sag to repair and never ever boost from white dwarves again. On the way back I found a nice pair of regular and planetary nebulas and safely made it to Explorer’s Anchorage.

The rest of the stage went mostly fine surprisingly. I submitted updates on POIs with lack of data and continued my way. And it’s not really hard to describe it but it’s rather… I can’t describe it… 2 months were gone just like 2 days, I just visited system by system, made shots and admired the views. I even landed on newly discovered 10.666G landable record (Newton’s Necropolis) without even thinking that in case of failure I could lose all my data. As for all the galactic beauties… it’s better to show rather than tell.

Also during this tour I managed to get Bigger, Smaller, Hotter, Colder achievement on EDSM. It’s awarded for finding a body that breaks into top 3 by any of its parameters. In particular, I found Biggest Radius White Dwarf (DCV) in Rhuedgie RJ-I d9-1851. And there are whole 3 funny things on this event. Firstly, EDSM didn’t notify me on getting the achievement and I knew about it only about 1.5 weeks later in the fortnight report. Secondly, it was the white dwarf with the same radius as the current record, so it was a record but it wasn’t a new record, so EDSM didn’t update the list of record bodies. Thirdly, after a month I got this achievement for the second time for finding largest white dwarf of another class in Eorm Breae LN-T e3-179 C. This time it was not nailed and just broke into top 3 but it still was quite a bizarre situation.

Initially I planned to fly back to Sag and then to Void sector from there but I ended up quite far into the Odin’s Hold and it was more convenient to visit Col once again and rest there rather than turn back to the Sag. And I did, getting to Col on May 11.

145246
145247

Pink Stage

Well not much to tell about the stage itself. Just an intermediate insignificant one. But still I can tell you some things about it, three I think.

Firstly, I visited molluscs of Col which I somehow missed during the first visit. Secondly, I took an odd challenge of visiting and scanning all of populated systems around the Colonia (they all remain undiscovered even if you visit Colonia), took 3 hours for me but I did it. Thirdly, I landed on The Mighty (9G planet about 3000 ly from Colonia) and got 3 high G landings so far.
145248
145250

After all of that, I did some POI checks for EDSM, with one double checked because of map lags, and was back to Explorer’s Anchorage.

145249
145251

Blue Stage

This is where real journey and exploration starts. But it starts with a failure and rage. About 2500 ly from Sag I was flying fighter around the mountains and idiotic autopilot decided to ram my mother ship into the mountain and destroyed it. I was so angry that I wrote a whole post on the issue though FD seem to have skipped it as usual. Nevertheless, writing to support and asking to resurrect me was a waste of time: I didn’t really have much data and I would have to wait for 2-3 days and it was just faster to fly back to the death spot manually and continue from there.

145252
145253

This is where real journey and exploration really starts. May 19 – the date of my last docking before the expedition ending, ahead were only 3 months of pure void with no civilization around. And I set off, firstly back to the death point and then further. The final destination of this stage was reaching left edge of the galaxy in The Void sector. Why exactly this sector? Well, I don’t know, I just liked the name and relative unchartedness of it.

145255
145256

Firstly, I flew to G2 gas cloud and then decided to explore upper part of the disc and there I found a truly breathtaking place which is Tales Of Giant Spheres POI. I also visited some other PIO and did a detour for Fading Hope nebula which is a really small supernova remnant. After flying a decent amount of light years and visiting Overseer’s Eye it was the time for the first part of Reflected Cradle Project. I spent nearly three days in the sector of reflected Sol and checked about 300 systems.

After that the way was nearly straight to the edge. Still I had some systems to check on my way like star giants or multiple stars. And at that point I got my name into the codex: Seqaae AV-V D3-0 - M-class giant. I dunno how people missed this thing and didn’t find any M giant in the entire sector (and I actually found another 3 of them during my voyage through the sector) but the fact was that my name was forever engraved in the codex. I didn’t check Schiqaea ZW-R D5-0, Phaa Brai JM-W E1-0 and Pilo Aob FM-U D3-0 systems because they were pretty far from my route, and I left them for the other explorers.

145263

As for the journey to the fringe, it was quite easy, even though I had to mess with the map at the end because the distances between stars were 80-100 ly and I had to constantly do synthesis and plot route manually system by system. But all in all, the western edge of the galaxy was reached on Jun 22.

145264

Red Stage

Though the way was really long there is not much to tell about it. By that time I got quite lonely and decided to open my crew every time I fly and it resulted in great people. Though I sometimes got some jerks I still managed to make a lot of new elite friends during this multicrew exploration.

145265
145266

The most astonishing things of this stage I think were a black hole on the outskirts and space trees in the depth of the abyss near BP. And I was actually the second (and am still the second) person to reach Far Oasis POI. After this detour I flew back to the more dense regions and finally got to Beagle Point and Salome’s Reach (the farthest system\body from Sol) on Jun 12.

White Stage

After a short break it was the time to go back to the bubble. Initially I planned to just go by circle to the bubble but I had some interesting unvisited places on the other side, plus wanted to meet up with a friend. So I had to fly nearly 25 000 ly back into the core, checking systems for EDSM and discovering my own. Plus I visited a sector of unique space molluscs in Formorian Frontier and submitted it as POI. I also did a second part of Reflected Cradle Project though it was kinda short, because people had already found Earth replicas on the opposite side of the galaxy.

All in all, I rendezvoused with CMDR Lemon With Legs in Hidden Treasures nebula and we went together up to Phoenix nebula. And there I met another friend of mine CMDR Odyss3y, who was flying back to the bubble after his short trip to the opposite site of the galaxy. I had a great time with both of them and after Phoenix Nebula mostly pushed to the Rendezvous Point (a system where first deep space unintended rendezvous happened) and reached it on Aug 7.

Yellow Stage

This was the easiest and the hardest at the same time. On the one hand, the only left is flying back to the bubble checking some POIs for EDSM and spending some additional time for the last part of Reflected Cradle project. But on the other hand, the distance which had to be travelled was enormous and I was really tired of the expedition by that point. Nevertheless, this was a kind of “last step” of the expedition which had to be done to get back home.

145294
145295

So, I made myself to push further and the first thing was to get to Grea Pruae QD-K c24-0. What was so special about that system? Well, there’s some story behind it. Back in 2016 when I still was learning to play elite I dreamed about deep space exploration and going to the another side of the galaxy. I chose a random system and bookmarked it, promising that one day I would get to it, and, as you see, I did. It turned out to be a regular insignificant system with a bunch of metal and ice bodies but still a one-time dream came true and that was the main thing.

Then I headed to the Ultima Centauri (half-way point between Sol and BP if going by circle) and reached it quite fast, discovering some new interesting places. After it was the third part of Reflected Cradle Project, though there I checked only about 100 systems because I was both tired and the closest Earth replica had been already discovered by another person. I also left Phreia Prau AA-A H36 and Phreia Prau AA-A E0 unchecked because they were very far from my way, so you may visit them yourself. The latter was kinda quickly flown but still was quirky enough. I visited some black holes in the outskirts of the galaxy and found my own proximity B star – black hole pair near Eock Prau Nebula.

Initially, I had plans to visit Tenebrae Region but when I started to look into this idea, I found that there is no direct connection to it from the arm where I was. So, I would have to fly about 15k ly to the “bridge”, get through it to the Tenebrae Arm, fly the same 15k back into the Tenebrae Region itself and about additional 5k to reach its edge. And in fact I could theoretically do that, but I was too tired and lazy by that moment, so I just left this journey for the next expedition and headed to the bubble.

145307
145308

During flying back I also got 20 000 visited and 10 000 first discovered systems on the EDSM in Grie Hypai TP-K B55-2 system and Deadly combat rank in Nueloi BA-A G1 system. Yes, combat rank being in the void far from any civilization! How? Well, I did breaks from endless jumps in multicrew and managed to get lacked 25% of my Dangerous rank to proceed to Deadly. Also, special thanks to CMDR Aiden Skye who helped me to get the very last percents to get the next rank.

145309
145310

One of the destinations near the bubble was NGC 3199 nebula, where I visited guardian ruins and did a rally race between two sites. You think it was superfun and I recorded it? Well, not really, it mostly was just a 2-hour gas pushing with rare hills and craters to evade. Plus, I was all alone and it made the process even more boring. Nevertheless, after leaving the nebula I headed directly to Hawking’s Gap abandoned settlements when I met up with one more friend – CMDR Fackemout and we flew together up to Eta Carina Nebula. We checked some brain trees there and I even wanted to make a small catalog of them but there was too much to check even for two people, so we set off back to the bubble. I had some systems on my way to check for EDSM so I lingered in the sector, while he pushed back to the bubble quite quickly. All in all, after all job was done I finally came back home after 8 months of being in the void. I docked Shinrarta Dezhra on Aug 31.

Epilogue

It was a wonderful, interesting and astonishing, but at the same time long, distant and tiring journey. Have I enjoyed it? Yes. Do I wanna make a similar one later? No. I may go out into the black once more but not on such long route. Or at least I will go on such a route with some friends. Though, the fact, that it always turns out that I’m left alone after several thousand ly traveled because my acquaintances get tired of the game, suggests that I am not gonna go on such long voyage again.

Fly safe! O7

P.S. I got a total of 7500 million credits profit from all the expedition.

P.P.S. And yeah, I use custom HUD and Reshade, so if you really liked the config I can drop it to you.

Very impressive journey and lovely documentation too! As it happens I just passed through that part of the Abyss a couple of weeks ago and noticed your tags more than once. I didn't add to the tally of visitors to Far Oasis as it would have required a quite circuitous sequence of premium boosted jumps with my range, but I did check out those aster tree NSPs in the vicinity.

Great Journey and some excellent pictures
You are clearly so much better organised than I am!
I recently passed thro' Hawking's Gap and found several of your tags.
There is still lots of 'Black' out there for you to visit - one more trip hardly seems enough ;)

All I can say is "WOW !"

That was quite a trip, and an excellent read even if it was long... all the pictures made it worth it. Thank you! (y)
