Not started playing yet. waiting for the tower to arrive but I have a question. I gather when you log out, you situation in the game is frozen at that point, despite he rest of the universe going on without you.

Would that mean that the ship you're using is a sitting duck for anyone who wants a quick and easy win?

I have logged out like this a couple of times, and have had no issues with getting attacked. I assume it puts you in solo mode or w/e, where there are no other players.

When you log out of the game not docked, your ship will dissappear after 10-15 seconds. The thing to remember is that the galaxy is still spinning even without you being there. So to avoid popping up inside an asteroid field when you log back in, I would only ever log out in open space.

Even that is not a problem - your position is saved relative to the next stellar body, as long as something else than 'deep space' is on your target panel. (Still wouldn't log out inside an asteroid belt, but often do so in orbit of a planet while exploring.)

Even if your ship didn't "disappear" 15 secs after you logout...
Space is big. REALLY big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the street to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space. Listen ...

The chances of anyone finding you are literally astronomical.
Asteroids, on the other hand...

Something like a cloaking system then... though I thought they were banned in the Federation due to the Algeron Treaty... or was that somewhere in a galaxy far, far, way...
