Driving me nuts....help?

Hi guys,

For the last 2 days something has been irritating me, i cant decide if im just being dumb but i cant figure it out!

Ok so the jist is, 40% of the time i cannot target a ship until im 2k away from it, i can see it, im approaching it, no diamond around it until i hit 2k then i can finally target it. Sometimes mid fight my lock comes off at about 2.5k. At first i thought it was some sort of silent running but its random and sporadic, and the ships have shields so cannot be running in SR mode.

Often at a beacon etc i'll cycle targets and can only target 2/3 ships when i can clearly see on the scanner, theres more like 10-12 within range.

Its happening on my Imperial Courier (only ship i fight with so not sure if its just this ship or all my ships), i have a D class scanner on to keep my mass down, ive had the same setup since last week however its only just started last night and today.

Anyone any ideas?

Cheers guys.

Happens to me to. Think something may be bugged. Sometimes I can't cycle targets at all.

I believe the heat signature of the target also effects actually being able to lock onto it. The ship may just be generating low amounts of heat meaning you have to get closer.

Check your sensors module class and rating. It may only have a 3km range or something like that. Then factor in that smaller and less heat emitting ships are harder to see than the bigger ones.

From the Wiki:

Contacts are shown in various colours and shapes, indicating information about each contact. All signals are resolved once their signature strength exceeds a certain sensor threshold. Signature strength is determined based on distance to the signal and its emitted heat. The scanner can be switched between linear and logarithmic mode, in logarithmic mode the area nearest to the ship is magnified to provide more resolution on the relative positions of object nearby.

Also, better classes of scanners can resolve further distances....the maximum being roughly 8 kilometers...since you are on the bottom of the quality line for scanners...1.8 to 2k sounds like it is the outer limits of the scanners capabilities.

Diamondback scouts are infamous for this, I've known them to get within 300 before I could target them.

Get the A sensor and and the ones you can't scan well are cool or using sinks, as has been said already.

Best stealth smuggler ever. Also an awesome stealth fighter with sinks. Tell no one.

Is it a DB S or DB E? they have a low thermal signature so although they can be visually detected the scanner won't lock on at longer ranges so get in close and personal! ;)

Thanks guys, might consider upgrading my scanner but quite like having my courier turn on a dime! I do have a DBS equipped for smuggling/stealth combat, ice would form on that thing in a fire, very fun ship :).
