Dropping into Low-Energy Wakes from SC

I heard that it was possible to play with friends now by following their Low-Energy wakes out of SC when they interdict/get interdicted or go to USSs. I tried this just now, and the first time I was able to follow my friend, though none of the NPCs he was fighting loaded for me, so I got to watch him flying in circles taking damage from nothing. The next 2 times I tried it wouldn't let me drop onto the wakes saying "Cloud not yet scanned". Which portion of this was bug, and which wasn't?

"cloud not yet scanned" was it a high energy wake? did they jump to another system? That requires a wake scanner.

Nope, just normal low-energy wake. I was following a buddy trying to test the feature. According to a response I got on Reddit, this just isn't fully implemented yet and is kinda buggy - I hope they clean this up by/in 1.2
