Dropping out of supercruise... Through a station!!

Hey everyone :)
I was trying to drop out of supercruise near Leoniceno Orbital. Because of my turning radius I didn't get my nose at the station, so I dropped out of supercruise 30 km east (?) of the station. I then turned my ship at the station, fired up the fsd and dropped right out of it, to get into the area where you normally drop out of supercruise. Next thing that happens I'm crashing right through the station and getting warnings telling me to leave immediately. Took a screenshot right after turning around so you can see my exhaust trail going right through the station.

Did something like this ever happen to you? Should i report it as a bug? Because I should have been destroyed (and the station damaged), right?

I've heard of people who dropped out of super-cruise and crashed straight into a station before, but I've never seen anyone go in one side and come out of the other unscathed! I think what happened is that when you exit super-cruise, your ship has no collision detection for the first few moments (when you are still decelerating from super-cruise speed), so you were able to clip right through the station without it registering a hit. If you had finished slowing down inside the station, you would indeed have exploded, but you went straight through it...

...As for why this happened, I'm not sure. When you exited super-cruise, did you have the station targeted (so that you got the 'safe to disengage' message), or did you just drop out manually (because you were already so close to it anyway)? I have heard that if you target the station, you will always drop out at a distance of about 8 kilometres... but if you drop out manually, you actually drop out at the exact location in space that you were at when you hit the disengage key, allowing you to potentially drop out much closer to the station. Like I said, I have seen people hit the station and die before, but you must have just judged it to perfection so that you literally flew through the station in that first split-second after dropping out! Or at least, I assume that is what happened... I can't explain it otherwise!

But no, I don't think it is a bug - I think it's just a one-in-a-million chance!

I crashed into the station once when experimenting with when I drop out. I was approaching the station from the 'wrong' end (i.e., the non-slot end) so I thought I'd try dropping out just after I passed the station - I let it fly 'under' me then hit the brakes. I dropped out too close to avoid a collision. Luckily I didn't die.

This issue has been around since beta and gamma. Thankfully its a lot rarer these days. If I remember correctly we used to exit SC 20kms from the station originally, then it got dropped to 10kms and the problems started.

The Orbis and Ocelles are the worst for it. Dropping out of SC 'behind' those types is playing with fire.

I've found the best way to avoid this from happening is to spiral in toward a station instead of the straight line approach. Use yaw to spiral around and position yourself between the spacestation and planet before exiting SC. If you get the timing right you'll pop out in front of the entrance, a safe 10kms out.

This happens frequently when you are in a wing and Navlocked to a friend.

When they safe disengage near the station sometimes when you automatically drop out after them you will go clipping through the station with loitering warnings and all.

It's alarming but at least it doesn't blow you up.

Only explanation I can think of ....you're a wizard !

Happens to me too. If you time your drop just right at a high rate of speed, say you wait until 5 Seconds and drop throttle to 0% and drop in half second window where safe disengage pops. I haven't crashed through a station yet but popping in several feet from the station happens quite often. Kind of a cool reward for a good approach kind of scary too.

Yes, I found approaching a station from inside it's orbit usually drops me out of supercruise in front of the station facing the slot.

Once, while dropping out from the wrong side of a station, I was warned not to hover over a landing pad.
So I presume I dropped out thru the station ...

Never drop out from the wrong side.

I actually had it targeted, so that I could see how far I had to go. Because I accelerated so fast going into supercruise I didn't have time to look how far I still was from the station.
Too bad I don't play Lotto..^^
