Engineers DSS engineering

I vaguely recall that there's a pre-engineered DSS available. Is it better than one you engineer on your own? Or, even better, can you add engineering on top of the pre-engineering?

Basically, what's the maximum possible probe radius percent increase you can get?

It is much better. There is no additional engineering.

That said. If you are a little handy with the normal engineered DSS. I would not bother. It might be nice if you are into gas giant scanning.

I prefer the pre-engineered one, but the difference is minor. Essentially it means you can map a planet with fewer probes, making it easier to get the bonus, but it's not like that is hard to do otherwise. Just a small advantage that is probably worth it if you map a lot of planets.

The other advantage of the pre-engineered one is that it's in some senses cheaper in materials than the engineering process would be despite being twice as effective - the manufactured materials are much lower-grade, and while it requires more raw materials if you're spending significant time visiting the mapped planets in your SRV they may well be ones you have a big surplus of anyway.
