DSS pre-engineered

I am reading about a DSS which is bought pre-improved. I understand that this is available from a human tech broker. How do I get one and can you engineer it once obtained?

Wiki states correct info still..

Engineered Detailed Surface Scanner V1

A pre-Engineered Detailed Surface Scanner with two Expanded Probe Scanning Radius modifications called "Engineered Detailed Surface Scanner V1" can be purchased at Human Technology Brokers. Unlike unlocking most other Technology Broker items, which makes them permanently available for purchase with credits at station outfitting services, unlocking the Engineered Detailed Surface Scanner V1 immediately places one module in local storage at no additional cost. The module must also be unlocked repeatedly in order to obtain multiple copies. Applying any other Engineering modifications to this module will remove the bonus second modification.

Unlocking requires the following Materials:

Still correct.. NO more engineering..

But what is the benefit of the pre-engineered one compared to the engineered one to level 5 with +50% radius which I already have?

Even greater radius scan than manual engineering and does not require going to engineers or unlocking engineers to even make..

IIRC the CG one (Broker) has 40% Radius? Std G5 only 30%?

O7

It should be better than G5 engineered...

Explanation of the CG DSS "twice the probe coverage":

In DSS engineering there is a base "G0" of +20%. Where does this come from? No one knows (probably meant as a way to make any engineering whatsoever be significant over unengineered).

Completing G1-G5 gives +2% more each, additive to this number. So completing G1 is +22%, G2 is +24%, G5 (when maxed) is +30%. CG DSS is +40%. You'll see these numbers in certain places.

Now: 30 (G5) is 50% more than 20 ("G0"). That's where the other number you usually see, 50%, comes from. And 40 is two times 20. That's where "twice the coverage" comes from.

The Human Tech Broker version has at least double the scan radius of an engineered one. Take the time to get the V1, and you'll never engineer one by yourself again. For example, for planets that say the number of probes to use is 6, I can fully map with only 2. If it says 7, I can easily do it with 3. If it says 4 (or less) I can do it with only 1 probe.

Indeed, they're a great improvement. I recently pulled a ship out of storage and didn't notice it had an unengineered DSS. It takes a lot more probes to map a planet with those.

I usually use one more for good measure, so I can target the next body and get moving while the probes are still underway. It's annoying if you need to turn back because the scan got stuck at 89% ;)
