DSS won't activate

Hi, I'm still on week one with ED but have successfully used my DSS to map 10+ worlds. Now I've moved onto an ASP explorer my DSS doesn't work. Followed the exact same routine, locked onto a planet in frame shift drive mode, moved to within 20mn, alotted the DSS to fire group 2, switched to scan mode, click mouse 2 and........ nothing. I've checked I actually have a DSS too so I don't know what else to do. I've been to key bindings and there doesn't seem to be a key
under DSS that says "activate DSS" which is odd so I can't allocate a key. I can with my FSS but not with my DSS. I've clicked mouse 1 and every key on my keyboard but no DSS target or probe launch. Can anybody please help ?

You seemed to have done everything to check this so it is a puzzler.

If you go back to your previous ship can you still map a planet?

The key binds won't change between ships.
The thing that would need doing is setting up a fire group, but you've already done that, you did switch to it?

Just an idea: Did you disable the DSS in your modules list? Or did you give it a low power priority, and have a power problem, so that it is deactivated?

Check, how your analysis mode screen looks: I have it bound to my mouse button 2, and in analysis mode (without activate the DSS) I see the blue lines, and on the left hand side is an entry for the DSS. As long as you are far from all mappable bodies the entry is red and it says 'out of range'. It you fly towards the planet to map, it may happen, that it says 'Too Fast'. If both speed and distance are okay, the DSS entry while becomes blue (active) and then I can start it with mouse button 2, in DSS mode mouse button 2 fires a drone. I had to set the mouse to adjust the DSS firing direction, this was not by default. But since you already used it, you know this and the buttons should be already set.

So I think either it is damaged or disabled.

EDIT: Also check your fire groups. If you have a second thing in your fire group (for me it is the Discovery Scanner (Honker)), then you need different buttons, I have the honk on button 1 and the DSS on button 2 in this fire group. And you need both, the correct fire group and Analysis Cockpit Mode.

A friend of mine had a similar problem. In the end it was the fire groups...

Edit: Sorry moonracer, haven't seen your edit! o7

Thanks for this MoonRacer. I had thought that to switch fire groups you needed to do it manually by opening up the fire group management screen and moving from A to B etc. This had no effect but I eventually stumbled on a key ( N ) that toggled through my firegroups and, as if by magic, the DSS appears. Sorry to have wasted your time but this conundrum took me hours to figure out..... Now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to get my seismic charges to not explode on their own but on my command and in unison. Thanks again.
