News DTS Headphone:X support in 2.2.03

Hey everyone

The game’s audio is a very important part of the immersion and core experience. As part of our ongoing efforts to improve on this experience for CMDRs, we’re adding DTS Headphone:X support to the 2.2.03 update. What this means is that the audio experience whilst using headphones will be enhanced with an improved sense of 3D and surround sound.

This feature is not recommended for speaker systems, as it’s intended for stereo headphones.

To enable this feature:

  • Set Windows to Stereo in your Sound settings of your Control Panel
    • Open the start menu
    • Type “sound” and select the Sound setting that appears
    • Find your active device
    • Click Configure to open the device settings
    • Ensure you have Stereo selected
  • Start Elite Dangerous - and make sure you’ve updated to 2.2.03
  • Go to your Audio Options and Enable DTS Headphone:X
  • Enjoy Surround Sound audio on your regular headphones

We hope you enjoy the new experience!

I'm assuming this is preemptive, and will only apply once 2.2.03 goes live sometime next year? Is this currently applicable to the 2.2.03 beta?

The beta changelog has a fix for DTS, so I'd assume so ;)

The main reason I was asking was to hopefully head off the inevitable questions about why 2.2.03 is not available, or how to get 2.2.03 since this was posted as a general item in the general News and Updates section for a product that will not be available for a while.

That's a valid concern, putting this in the general announcements seems premature.

Yes. Following the listed instructions to make sure one is updated to 2.2.03...well...can't do that for at least a few weeks yet. I am curious if this is actually available in the 2.2.03 beta though.

I'm confuzzled as well. Was this added with the latest beta 3 update or is it an announcement for when the entire update goes live next year?

Hi Dale,

do you have any info if that also supports 'real' 5.1 headsets like the Sharkoon X-Tactic?

My headset is connected to the digital TOSLink via a real Dolby DTS 5.1 decoder, so I'd require a 'normal' 5.1 digital audio signal for surround sound.

Confirming it's in Beta 3 :)

That's great news. Sound is a major part of the game for me so I really appreciate updates like this!

Does software surround for headphones need to be turned of? For example I have Logitech G930s that does it's own surround thing. I assume it needs to be disabled and the headset set to stereo?

Guess my question is: Does this only work correctly if the playback device is completely "vanilla" ?

Also, IMO, the audio in ED is amazing. All involved with the audio in ED should be very proud of themselves.

Unless it has dedicated stereo mode.
It's a no.

Hm... It will be much detter, if the game will use Dolby Digital 5.1 on ZxR. Sometimes after 2 paches, it sounds perfectly! Positioning, 3D, etc... But only the first time :( How it happens - no mind. Sound in system is exactly 5.1, speakers test shows it. ZxR, optical out, attached 2 Sharkoon XTatic Digital block.
