Dual control xbox controllers

I'm trying to teach my 5yo to fly a Sidewinder - he has his own Commander and everything - and it's actually easy enough with launch & docking computers active...we're using a 360 controller, as he can get his hands round it, but I was hoping that having two plugged in as we do, that the second controller would work too, so it'd be like a dual control driving school car. However, the second controller isn't working once we start up...anyone got any ideas?

If Windows can distinguish the two XBox controllers (and I just hope you're using them either wired or through that XBox dongle, native Bluetooth is shaky at best for XBox controllers), you'll "just" need to create a custom bindings file (through the ingame "options" menu) that will do what you want.

I.e. - ED may very well recognize that second controller, there just aren't (per default) assigned any actions to the input. Understandably so - how otherwise should ED guess that you want to use that second controller for the ship instead of a dedicated controller for
  • SRV
  • free camera
  • FSS ?
People have been (and are) using these controllers for these (and other, probably) tasks in addition to their main controller for flying their ships.

Alternatively, you can use keyboard and mouse or a HOTAS for alternate bindings. Most HOTAS systems register as multiple DirectInput devices and are thus distinguishable by Elite Dangerous.

While XInput supports the distinction of 4 gamepads at the same time, it's unclear whether Elite Dangerous actually supports such a configuration. The format of the binds file suggests against it (see %localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings )

I've got three devices plugged into my pc prior to starting ED. One is a keyboard and mouse, one is a xbox One X controller and one is a Warthog and throttle combination. Though I never utilize the KB+M, I do utilize the hotas for flying and the controller for driving. I've never connected two of the same devices in and assume only one would work anyways. Though ED know which device is being utilized, how would ED know which of the two same devices, is to be utilized?

If ED recognizes each controller as a different device you could just repeat your binds for each controller since there are 2 columns for each bind. Otherwise you'd have to trick Windows into thinking both controllers are the same device when you use either.
