Dual Joysticks or HOTAS

as Thrustmaster makes a lefthanded version of their T1.6000 i always wondered how well that might work in Elite Dangerous.

I play with a controller (on PC) but considered an investment into another stick (i have a Logitech 3D Extreme Pro currently, but a controller is more comfortable)

Or you could use the analog hat on your throttle as a stick.
Usually for the vertical and lateral strafe.

Everything else is basically already covered by the HOTAS.
Stick for pitch / roll.
Rudder pedals or twist for yaw.
Throttle for forward/backward motion.

6DoF completed.

The T16000 stick can be converted to left or right handed use, there is no separate left-handed version (you get the parts in the box for both).

So you could just buy one & use it with your left hand. The only player I'm aware of that uses twin sticks is ALGOMATIC.

yeah. i figured it would provide a greater means of control on your ship.

Thats good to know. Adding pedals would superfy the immerusion

The Thrustmaster pedals plug into the FCS throttle. There is a dongle available to use the pedals as an independent USB device but I gather it's no longer available.

I'm sure other pedals are available (that act as an independent controller) but if you were to buy the T16000FCS + pedals set (~£200) you would still have the option to use your logitech stick in the right hand, T16000 stick in the left & have the pedals plugged into the (potentially unused) FCS throttle.

You could also continue to use your logitech stick in your right hand with the FCS throttle (and pedals), the FCS throttle is an independent USB device too.

Hope this makes sense :)

I use the Hotas X-Flight, first one was bad with drift in the x-axis- new one is great so far.
Wish it had more buttons but started using voice attack with ASTRA and all good now.

One thing to keep in mind is that the t16.000 hotas combo has a lot more buttons directly in reach of your fingers then a dual t.16000 stick solution, and a second analog stick for thumb use. The stick itself has only 4(?) buttons in reach, the base 12 are only reachable if you take the hand off the stick. For me that would rule a dual stick solution out.

What he said about the buttons on the throttle . The buttons on the stick base are difficult to “guess” in the heat of the moment. You will have to take your eyes off screen to make sure you press the right one.
I have the pedals too, but I don’t use them in ED. The normal joystick twist is sufficient for me to control the yaw.
If you play flight sims the pedals are okay, you can control the rudders like you would expect but you also have a 2nd axis that you can assign to an individual wheel brake. Makes taxing a lot easier

Another vote for HOTAS. Not so long time ago I have upgraded from 3D Extreme Pro to X52 Pro and it was one of the best decisions. 3D Pro is ok stick, I have used it for over 2 years. I was researching options: dual stick (T.16k for left hand) as addition to my 3D Pro - felt weird having better stick in my off hand. 2x T.16k as base setup but cost wise I could have proper HOTAS. So if HOTAS then which?

Warthog and Virpil was above my budget, T.16k HOTAS I have touched and wasn't impressed at all. Especially with this sliding throttle. Too light, too small (I have rather large hands), too "cheap and plasticky" in feel. I won't deny sensopr quality as I heard only praise - for me this product wasn't "speaking to me".

Ideally I opted for new (gray) X-56. Two problems with it: 1. still unconvinced about build quality. It improved over previous blue version but I still hear mixed reviews. 2. totally out of stock in my country. Price wise it was slightly over the budget but if quality was top notch and available to purchase I would buy it. Instead I went after X-52 Pro.

Not what I was aiming for, I could use features present in X-56, like thumb stick on stick, additional throttle buttons. But despite X-52 being few steps lower than X-56 I'm totally happy that I bought it. Not only it costed half the X-56 price, it performs surprisingly well. Size and ergonomy fits my hands well, materials are nice in touch, buttons and functions are well spread. Upgrading from 3D Pro added massively to the overall experience. There is something in sliding that throttle. i just wish it had longer move for more precise speed control but it's just personal preference.

Get HOTAS, you won't be disappointed.

Years ago, I used dual joysticks to play Descent. It was quite effective and I was very maneuverable.

These days, I use a Logitech x52 HOTAS.
Same here. Descent rocks I still stick with a Dual setup use ST290 Pro and x52 Pro Both Saitek.

I use dual Virpils. They're rock solid. I prefer the sprung throttle that centres on zero to a conventional sliding throttle. I use one of the left hand hats to set 0%, 50%, 75% and 100% throttle when I'm cruising. No shortage of buttons and hats. I also like having two pinkie buttons, one for flight assist and one for boost.

The only problem I have is that if I mess with the USB between sessions, ED gets mixed up which side is which, so I have to logoff, resequence the USB and restart ED. Does this happen with other dual sticks?

Two work quite well although the T16000 I feel could use a pinkie switch and an extra hat.

I use dual T.16000 and prefer it for 6-dof spaceship control. Roll, pitch and yaw on the right stick with forward/aft, left/right, and up/down on the left. The joysticks have centering springs which would be been a problem holding thrust for long distance crusing, except the T.16000 also has a throttle slider that I use to set and forget my cruising thrust. The left stick will add or subtract thrust around the throttle slider set point. When docking, throttle slider is set to zero with all maneuvering thrust controlled by the left stick.

If you go dual joystick, try to find joysticks with as many buttons on the actual top of the stick as possible, preferably with a pinky switch for easy combination use (use it as a "shift key")

The T1600 isn't great for this, as it has only four buttons and a hat switch accessible by your hand while using the stick.

yeah. the 3D extreme pro has 4 buttons on the top plus hat switch, trigger and the "thumb button" that generally gets mapped to missiles or alternate fire. I figure if i got one of those i can keybind the buttons so say button 4 on the left stick will activate the weapon groups but combining LS4 (left stick button 4) and RS5 (Right stick button 5) will deploy landing gear.

I guess similar to how a default button config for a controller will have combo keybinds. But real life is really ruining my wants and needs of building a fancy setup. I wonder if i can find a surplus F16 seat. 10/10 would quit my job just to play ED in one of these set up in my mancave

I’ve programmed a TARGET script that let’s me use a Short Press/Long Press protocol with dual T.16000 sticks to double up functions on top stick buttons and hat. This in combination with Voice Attack let’s me do pretty much everything without having to take my hands off the sticks.
