Newcomer / Intro Dual Stick Setup [Help request]

Hello,

I'm trying to setup my joysticks to Elite: Dangerous, but I'm having a lot of trouble. One, I can't seem to get the game to register my sticks (one is new, and the other very gently used). Two, I don't know what controls are usually assigned to where on a stick. Are there profiles I can download, or an update to date reference sheet maybe that I can follow? Any help would be great.

My sticks: 1x Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and 1x Logitech Attack 3.
*I would like my Attack 3 to handle throttle, and my Extreme 3D PRO to be used for everything else related to flight, but again, lost on those things mentioned above.

"can't get the game to register my sticks" - what exactly are you doing, and what do you expect to happen?

First step in this kind of error tracking would be to check whether Windows recognizes your sticks:
0) Settings -> Devices -> Bluetooth and other Devices -> scroll down, all the game devices should be there somewhere
1) open the control panel, then try this: https://www.howtogeek.com/241421/how-to-calibrate-your-gaming-controller-in-windows-10/ (the way they use to get at the "Devices and Printers" control panel doesn't work for every setup, but the description works from there on)

If the sticks are there in Windows, ED will see them. Open ED -> Options -> Controls, select what you want to assign the specific button/axis to, then wiggle that button/axis. Rinse, repeat - up to 32 times for each stick.

Bindings from other people can be found here: https://edrefcard.info/ - but I somehow doubt that you'll find a setup for your specific combo. I use dual Virpils, with the rotational controls on the right stick and the translational controls on the left. Buttons ansd other twiddly bits take care of everything else, and I've almost managed to not re-use ship controls for menu controls. It's always frustrating if you can't deploy hardpoints because you have a menu open somewhere and the "move up" key hijacks the "deploy weapons" button...

They register on Windows. I can check all the buttons and sticks as working, too. It is just when I launch ED I only see "Generic Joystick" in a list, and when I select that, all of the boxes appear grey and not able to be edited. I will try your link after I'm done with this post, really hope it at least makes them pop up in game.

Wow, thank you for the link! The RefCards look great, and are very easy to follow! Now I just gotta figure out what some of the terms listed here means, but Google should have those answers I think. 😅

Improvement, yes! That seemed to do it? I'm not entirely sure. They are both working in game now, but I can't seem to select which device to set up to what. It's acting like they are all 1 device, rather than 2 separate devices.

Oh!!! Elite: Dangerous is registering them both now, it just presents it like they are 1 device. I went to go set up which stick controls YAW etc and it was saying it was already bound. It is really confusing to have the game present it like that to you. I really wish they'd look into that. lol

Use a the custom bindings profile, then assign every button and axis that you need. Start at the top of the bindings list and work your way down. You can leave off anything that you don't need in the short term. You have to figure out for yourself what you want each button/axis to do. When I had twin sticks, I had yaw and throttle on the left and pitch and roll on the right. It worked really well. I noe have Virpil throttle and Alpha stick that give me all the buttons and axes I need.

Hello,

I'm doing just that. I used someone's profile as a base, and I'm making adjustments. Problem is, not sure what I'm going to be needing ready constantly, so it will take quite a while to setup. However, I've got the basic flight stuff down and I can at least leave stations, target, etc, so that is already leagues ahead of where I was earlier! lol

Can I point you towards this post to save you a lot of possible heartache in future:

lost your binds? want hasstle free backed up binds look no further

keybindings can reset if you visit the control section without one of your usual devices used to play the game ie hotas , xbox pad etc not plugged in or at that present moment is undetected by windows as it thinks your just using keyboard and mouse it simply rewrites your binds for you...

Laterals on the Left Stick, Rotationals on the right stick. Forward throttle on right pedal, reverse throttle of left pedal.

Well, I've set it up and have been playing with it since, but I'm finding combat insanely difficult compared to mouse. It feels like I'm just spinning around. Is this something that just takes time to adjust to via sticks, or could it just be a very simple setting I'm missing to set up?

I've tried turning FA on and off, it just doesn't seem to help at all. But when I go back to mouse, FA on or off makes a difference and I can fly at least decently.

Hmmm.... how did you set up your axes? Can you post a screenshot?

Essentially - not saying it has to look like this, but this setup works for me for twisty sticks:

Mouse off (otherwise, that's an accident waiting to happen):

If you think you got the mapping correct, then it's time to delve deeper - you'll need some joystick analysis tool to check what the stick actually delivers. Or a known good stick to compare against.

I took some screenshots of the same settings. I used a video to go by, but only followed it for the YAW etc.

As for the sticks, I'd really hope they aren't broken. One is practically new, the other is brand new. lol it would suck big time if they had faults.

I also switched to Dual Sticks a couple of weeks ago, and I can tell you I'm loving it. ^^ I never played with mouse, just single stick + keyboard before.

If FA is On and you're still spinning around, that sounds like there's some bad input from or interference between the sticks. Not sure though. You said you are using two Logitech, I use 1 Thrustmaster and 1 Saitek and they've worked just fine from the moment I plugged them in, so no idea if it's a "brand thing".

I also did retain all my old keyboard binds (like A D for yaw etc) just to be on the safe side and haven't had any issues with them.

My setup for left stick:
X axis left-right "strafing" thrusters
Y axis up-down thrusters (so that when I push the stick forward, the ship goes UP)
Z axis prograde/retro thrust (i.e. "forward / reverse") - e.g. when I twist the stick right, the ship accelerates, when I release it reverts to the preset
Buttons: presets for 0 / 50% / 100% forward thrust, boost, FA (Push=Off, Release=On).
