Dual Sticks: Pitch+Yaw vs Pitch+Roll on main non-twist stick

I am thinking of changing up my control scheme. My main stick is a non-twist stick, and i am wondering if switching to pitch+roll is worth it in combat vs pitch yaw. Fighting the muscle memory so far has been very frustrating to the point it has been difficult to determine if the new scheme is better.

So what do you think is pitch+roll better in combat than pitch+yaw on a non-twist stick? (i have the other rotation axis on a hat) Is there enough of an advantage to justify relearning the controls?

I have tried both.

I feel pitch+roll is more natural than pitch+yaw....to...me <-- my pref, not everyones cup of tea.

I still have my Target Script set to allow me to switch between one and the other with a modifer switch.
I rarely use Pitch+Yaw these days, but did use it when I was more active in PvP.

YMMV

I cannont comment directly based on exprience as I've always used twist-sticks for Elite, but there is a halfway house option in the controls settings, "yaw to roll". From what I gather it starts with a small input on the x axis initiating a yaw, but a larger input switches to roll. And if I remmeber correctly, there is an option to bind a bitton to it so you could switch it on or off / toggle X-Axis for yaw or roll. Like I said I'm not 100% on this but I am aware of it and thought it might be an interesting solution for you.

Although if you have pedals as well I'd suggest sticking to the X-Axis for roll and use the pedals for yaw like a real plane does.

I fly with twin twist sticks, so my set up is yaw pitch and roll on right, throttle vertical and laterals on left. Before that I was on a hotas, and briefly experimented with pedals for laterals and vertical thrusters on the slide and toe brakes respectively. A set of pedals would be good for your setup, put yaw on the pedals, and verticals on the toe brakes. But before splurging on a set of pedals, maybe the OP should try "Yaw into Roll"?
