Dual Universe Sandbox space game

Well i was always wondering about blaze your own trail quote ED throws around like it's an actual thing in ED.

Well wonder no more, the truly blaze your own trail game that fits my vision of this whole thing is Dual Universe. Check out promises that Dual Universe is writing about. I know they have nothing to show yet, but it's the idea. Sandbox Universe where you can dig voxel planets, build ships, build cities, and everything is made by players.

I'm not saying it's a good game or that it will be a good game. Game might suck hard like 100 year old candy, but it's the idea that counts. NMS is not quite there, i mean sure it's nice to mine voxel planets there, but Dual Universe kinda writes down what i think of blazing my own trail kinda game. You should definitely check it out.

And now the long quote:

Game Features

Seamless true MMO universe
When we say "massive", we mean it. We have developed a unique way to handle lots of players all at once so they can share experiences in a single continuous, undivided universe.

Emergent Gameplay
The politics within Dual Universe will depend on the players. Ideologies, powers, ideas and gameplays will emerge as they have done throughout history.

Voxel Building
Using voxel technology, players have the creative freedom to design and build anything they can imagine. Spaceships, buildings, cities, satellites, there is no limit.

Scriptable Ships & Constructs
For advanced players, the ability to script any ship/construct (LUA) to redefine how it is controlled, from navigation to weapon systems. You can even script your own A.I. to assist you!

Realistic in-game economy
The economy in Dual Universe is realistic and influenced by the masses. Initiate a market exchange, harvest resources and sell them, start an industrial empire, do marketing and logistics, create a bank or your own company.

Team-up or go solo
Ships can involve hundreds of players specializing in weapon, nav-systems or repair. Get on the deck of the Enterprise and command your crew! ...or go solo and explore the cosmos on your own.

There is one suspicious statement: Voxel+unlimited and we all know how games like Space Engineers/KSP or any other game that relies on making your own ships from parts starts to insanely lag the bigger it gets.

Custom lua scripts? Sure Space Engineers have that and they are limited and probably could be handled without killing your CPU. I say this is possible.

Big ambitions but can they deliver?

"Check out promises,"

Sorry not interested, done with promises, need actual finish game.

So i assume you don't own Elite Dangerous then?

They promise things even better than star citizen! I kinda don't really care about ultra graphics lately. But gameplay and smooth framerate is king in this year.

Have you seen prealpha screenshots? I mean niceeeee.

ED is an actual game, I can play it, just gets better, Star Citizen is a buggy mess I opted out on that one.
Been playing DayZ for years, its just, no more unfinished games for me ATM. I'd check it when they got something that is playable :)

I tried registering on their forums and looks like it's a scam. Good thing i used my random password generator. After activating account it says like as if i never created account there and it said invalid password. Well there goes one faster than it came. Man this pace things is fast nowadays.

Scriptable ships and an MMO economy don't mix. Any game that promises both hasn't thought this through.

Maybe they can't use all the API you know. I bet 50% of those things will be scrapped or it will be a total sandbox where nobody cares about some scripts.

It will take another 2 years in their own estimates to release. My game of long-term choice is still ED which has a sensible approach of iterative development (even if I don't agree with some FD priorities like PP and Engineers).

DU have lofty ambitions and claims for a small team, which require 'proof'. But I'll follow their progress as it looks very interesting.

Other rambling thoughts;

The scriptable ships idea has been thought through at a simple economic level. PvP players get ships destroyed and damaged; builders build ships and need money to buy materials, miners supply materials. Economy formed. Players protect builders and built things they bought, etc. Emergent gameplay. Of course this depends on an active player base and during down-times or if the game isn't super popular it could be/get sparse economically. Their plan to keep players to a few planets at first and then slowly let them explore and build out should give them some more time to work on the PG tech without many edge cases.

Unigine is 64-bit so capable of solar system sized areas. But to go between systems, it is totally not clear how DU will handle as they say, seamlessly without instancing. Planet sizes look smallish and they quoted a few thousand Km as large. Probably won't rotate and orbit accurately but possible. High quality Unigine scenes can kill frame rates but the new 14 Nm CPU/GPU combos and Vulkan may make them fly.

No one develops in a vacuum, and I do hope the wizards at FD have noticed. They have some cool terrain deforming tech and building tools with Planet Coaster. The idea of Player Builders being able to sell creations like spaceships is also cool. Or to have a team work on actually building a space station- I can't imagine how cool that would look in real-time. I don't really want to run a business in ED, but building some stuff would be cool. And apparently with EVE and other MMO's some folks like managing a virtual company.

One of my favorite games include Software INC. so yeah there are lot of folks who like to run things. For me it's interresting to see this project being started. Well let's hope it won't end like Seed of Andromeda (industrial space minecraft clone) that just died year ago after 2 or 3 years of development.

On paper, Dual universe indeed looks spectacular. True MMO sandbox game with vast opportunities and unlimited freedom in almost every sense. I hope they will be able to deliver, but the scope and number of different gameplay elements they will be trying to put in place are huge, huge task. I wish them all the luck.

Dunno... my registation went completely normaly.

Star Citizen syndrome, never finished.

The same warning flags that went up with the Star Citizen kickstarter also come up with this KS campaign. They still want to do player-scriptable stuff in LUA, but also allow for an online economy system that leads to territory control and power.

There'll be money making machines in no time. This just does not work.

I'll ask again in this thread as the other one got closed apparently. Anyone knows what the 'DACs' stand for on their kickstarter page? Some kind of subscription?
