Dueling under new Crime and Punishment.

After watching the Dev stream on the crime and punishment. I thought about an issue with dueling other players and the crime and punishment.

Both players are supposed to turn off their report crimes, but if one person decides to turn it back on because they are losing then the other gets their karma changed.

Why not add a request duel option under the contacts menu? Both players need to agree to the duel and then it would make it anything done in the duel between those 2 players not count for crime and punishment.

Almost all MMOs have this feature. It would keep sanctioned duels legitimate, and stop people from being sore losers.

I hadn't even considered that some players turn "Report Crimes" back on mid-duel... What a cowardly world we live in.

Maybe this could be avoided with a more simple solution. For instance, adding some sort of cool downstate or instance conditioning to the "Report" option.
Turning off "Report Crimes" would be like declaring yourself officially open to PvP, and you wouldn't be able to turn it back on again until:

a) your ship is destroyed
b) you jump to another system
etc.

It wouldn't prevent high waking or combat logging or other unsporting acts, but it would at least prevent people from "grassing" on you after both parties consented to fisticuffs.

Turn off "Report Crimes Against Me". I am assuming this will still work.

No. It turns off crimes against you, now crimes you cause against others.

So if your opponent turns it on as the OP is worried about you still get the fines.

I would think that the switch would be configured to be delayed until you are cleared from combat - so you can't purposefully swap it while fighting.

It would be a hit on PvE combat where you can't change your mind if you are ambushed, but that's a risk you chose to have it off, right?

2.3 implemented a timer for turning on 'report crimes against me' and a message is displayed to anyone who has the player targeted.

Basically, this issue has already been addressed.
