Rep with factions, both major & minor.

Can one improve their standing through non-combat stuff? I only do raw trading right now, but I'd like to know what to prepare for come Engineers & a potential upgrade in thrusters for my Cobra.

Many thanks. o7

Yes you can- selling exploration data, just taking missions for the faction (non-combat), but usually they are a bit less influencing than combat missions, but not always :)

Certainly.
Trading if I remember correctly will increase your rep, non combat missions also work very well too.
Missions also help with Naval Rank Progression, which may also be needed for The Engineers too!

Only way to get Naval rank progression is through missions (I find classified data transportation give the most progress per mission but aren't really stackable or fast compared to donations and base assaults), trading, combat and exploration data will only give reputation.

If you want to gain reputation with a minor faction you have a number of ways:
Missions for the faction always work - high rep is best.
Missions for factions in nearby systems can sometimes affect your rep with a faction, but sometimes negatively.
Failing missions lowers your reputation.
Trading (including smuggling illegal goods), selling mined goods and selling exploration data all increase your reputation with the faction that controlls a station. It works on profit, so mining has more effect than trading.
Bounty hunting increases your rep with the faction the bounty isi for, otherwise it's the station owner.
Getting fines and bounties against you lowers your reputation. Killing a faction's ships does as well.
.
Money wise, it takes about 2.5 million (bounties, profit, exploration) to become friendly, and about 7 million to become allied.

If you're doing mining, you naturally want to take mining missions because they're instant-complete and very profitable if you're already hauling mined metals anyway. Without even trying I gained naval rank.

(Ok ok, once the naval ascension opportunity (NAO) missions started appearing, I did a courier delivery NAO to seal the deal, but otherwise it was just me selling my metals for top dollar, with extra naval rank thrown in free)

There are NO dumb questions... only dumb answers. Remember that and ask away [yesnod]

The only stupid question is the one that is never asked, except maybe "Don't you think it is about time you audited my return?" or "Isn't is morally wrong to give me a warning when, in fact, I was speeding?" - Jack Handey
