Dumb question: where to get "stolen" goods?

Yeah, after all this time, I feel dumb to ask but since I always ignored those missions, I honestly don't know and decided I would ask to the community wisdom here. When you get a mission to provide stolen goods, where do you steal them from?

Someones cargo hold? Better go to station that exports stuff you want to steal. Hang outside space station and cargo scan ships until you find one with cargo you need/want. Wait npc to jump wake scan his high wake and follow him to other system, then interdict and pirate npc. Usually the fastest way.

signal sources work too. But you can be unlucky and have to check many signal sources. By stealing from npcs, you can go for targets you know have cargo you need.

Thank you, that's another good idea.

It seems that you would need a cargo scanner to do that. Will have to see what I'm dropping to make room if I decide to take those missions, or I just might try the signal sources.

If you get a cargo scanner and already have a KWS, make sure they are the same model if you plan to fire them off at the same time. If not, one may not work properly.

Oh and you can fire the cargo and KWS scanner off at the same time to kill two birds. Should have mentioned that first. :)

If you have buddies they can jettison their cargo and it gets a stolen tag.

Depending who's around I might ask someone to buy me a ton of whatever and then jettison. It can save some time if you're both mission stacking.

How come you left these missions alone?
I thought you were into BGS operations.
Sometimes the only missions you can get for a faction are those ones.

I never actually put much effort in BGS. I did help a bit to try flipping a system but that was for PP. The BGS is still too unreliable right now. I dunno why I was able to avoid them to get where I am. I just got one offered yesterday and started thinking about it and realized I didn't even know where you get those stolen goods. I know you can sometimes drop to signal sources but since you can find all kind of things, that seemed like the flip of a coin...

What would be nice, when you take a stolen goods mission, would be to overhear some Comms chatter that hinted that a ship carrying a cargo of whatever was destroyed near a certain planet in the system. This way, finding the correct WSS to drop into would be a little less random. Of course some messages could be traps, it would also provide more of a reason for the psychic powers that the cops seem to have when you take a mission.

Look on your galaxy map for systems exporting these goods, go there, camp outside a station producing them with a cargo and wake scanner. When an NPC leaves with the desired goods, use your wake scanner to follow them, interdict them on the other side and steal the cargo.

That's a very good suggestion. Here's hoping Frontier will read it!

Wow! Those cargo and wake scanners are very energy hungry! On my Cutter, I would have to drop 3 A0 shield boosters to have them!
