Dupe Scenery Without Moving Piece Placement

I find the dupe (crtl+d) work very well under certain circumstances and not at all under others. I keep trying to find the consistent method of duping while keeping the item in-line with the previous item placed.

For example, if I am places an item for the first time and have entered the xyz axis editing at the time of placement, hitting crtl+d will dupe that piece with the xyz axis active so I can drag it up/down, left-right perfectly in line with the last piece. Now, let's say I've done this with 3 or 4 pieces and now it's time to change my angle to match the angle of a wall that is 30 degrees off from the last wall. For one, I pretty much have to start over with the new piece placement as the last placements are now all linked in the grid to the pieces placed beforehand. That part alone can be a bit frustrating, but nets other benefits I realize. However, what gets really frustrating is trying to consistently dupe a piece that you've put down and then already clicked off.

If you have a trim piece that you click on to edit and you are able to individually select it and then hit x to edit it's xyz axis and follow that by hitting crtl+d, the piece doesn't always dupe in line like when laying it down for the first time. I keep trying to figure out the rhyme or reason I can get this to work some times and not others. I've figured out that if I have clicked on a piece already laid and must edit the building through the upper right menu, once I enter the xyz axis need to click 'Done' on the building edit menu. If the xyz axis edit remains active once clicking done, then I can hit crtl+d and it will dupe in line. However, it doesn't always remain active. Hitting done will sometimes deselect the individual piece and thus you can't edit and dupe. Dupe will work on the non-xyz axis editing selection, but the piece just floats to wherever your cursor is which is frustrating in of itself.

So, a couple of questions. 1) Is this user error? Is there a guaranteed way to dupe an item while keeping it in the exact same place every time? Is there a successful workaround to accomplish this that I am not using 2) If the edit xyz axis method I've tried above isn't the way, is there a way with the normal selection of an item to dupe the piece while keeping it in the exact same place so that right after you can hit X to enter the xyz axis movement and slide the piece perfectly in line to wherever you want it?

My building skills right now seem very slow, especially when comparing to others I watch, and I am not sure if it is me missing something in the UI/controls or just needing more practice. Any insight would be very helpful. Thanks!
