E:D as an eSport

Its a bit like the cannonball run rather than a track race in that you are in the "real world" racing (or whatever sport you are taking part in) and anyone can interfere with it and usual universe rules apply (except bounties etc between participants as they have entered into a 'contract'.
That is the way I see it, anyway!

Nah, keep the bounties in. Didn't the original Cannonball Run feature individuals who were *wanted* and therefore had to evade law enforcement?

You may even get to the point where groups of people will try and and disrupt the race and opposing groups fighting back, trying to ensure it all runs smoothly!

Some interesting ideas here.

Like the idea of involving it "in game" though it would be useful to have a duelling option - only if agreed by both parties - that basically says leave the authorities out of this.

That way if someone was hit in game by an unwelcome challenge and they refused then the attack would be treated as criminal in the normal way.

Much as I'd love to see this kind of thing, I haven't seen it mentioned specifically as a multiplayer feature. Racing and gambling may just be types of missions with special rewards.

If it isn't an implemented feature there is nothing to stop an enterprising player to actually set one up in game. Become the Bernie Ecclestone of Elite, Frontier Racing.

Have a prize worth racing for, charge a hefty fee for entrance (your organisation has to make a profit or was that to cover the price of security?) have some race officials at strategic locations to ensure there is no cheating (bribes accepted ;) ) and then have the winner broadcast on the news feed. You never know within a year you could be running a racing schedule at various systems within the game! ;)

Racing

Although there are no arena or duel modes within the game, I wonder if it would be possible to stage competitive encounters, such as space battles or dogfights, which could be adjudicated and the results confirmed somehow?

Are there any ideas of how this could be achieved with minimum effort on behalf of developers that wouldn't break immersion or existing game features?

Slightly off-topic, but involving competition (and eSports) - unfortuately the 1st mission thread closed, but I did post in some forum about the races - so much want to see this in the game. Gumball 3000 style; or any of the great driving films (including Vanishing Point - you have to escape enemy faction/hostile territory after ending up deep in to it's territory, and you've got to race your way out).

Racing/competition elements involve loads of different ideas that can easily be taken from fictional and fact-based racing, I think FD would do great to incorporate this, and reach out to more players.

Have badges/medals/titles for racing, so you might win the Trumball 3000Ly three months in a row. Reputation looks so good all of a sudden. Lose a few races after that? So what: you won three in a row. Free golden 'ting!' with every smile.

When the update arrives where we can walk around in third person around the space port, I can imagine a group of people meeting in a bar and challenging them to a race to a far off port so it starts with an on foot race to their ship to see who can get clearance first etc - it should be interesting :)

Like some sort of biathlon. Maybe when we're walking around on planets, it will get even more extreme with running, swimming, driving, etc. added into the mix.
