Looks like coriolis.io has different shield stats, making its shield worse than the Cobra's:
http://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback/04A4A4A2D3A2D4C27270p0p04---402t5b24 Can anyone confirm which one is right?
Edit: Looks like edshipyard may be wrong. CMDR player one posted a reverse engineered formula for shield strength at
http://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/2r813l/shield_classrating_testing_results/ (Shield Strength (in MJ) = [Ship Shield Rating] * [0.53821 * erf([1.0228] * [Shield Optimal Hull Mass] / [Ship Hull Mass] - 0.66391) - 0.0588 * [Number of Rating Levels Below A] + 0.56377]). If both shields have the same rating (both A) we can simplify that to "shield strength = k * shield rating * shield optimal hull mass / actual hull mass" for some value of k. Plugging in the values for both ships (Cobra with A4 shield has shield rating 80, shield optimal mass 285 and actual hull mass 180, DBS with A3 shields has SR 93, SOM 165 and AHM 170) we end up with a shield strength for the cobra of k * 126.667 and for the DBS k * 90.265. Using this formula we can conclude that to get equivalent shields on the DBS as a cobra you need two A shield boosters (126.667 / 90.265 = 1.403 ie 40.3% more ie twice the 20% boost from an A shield booster).
Edit 2: Interestingly, it looks like coriolis may be wrong too (or my math above

). I just tried building a cobra with A4 shields and no boosters, and it has a shield strength of 125.58MJ. A DBS with A3 shields and just one A booster has a shield strength of 132.79MJ, which is larger than the cobra's value. According to my formula above, a DBS with two A boosters should have shields just a bit weaker than a cobra's.
Edit 3: Ah, it's my math that's wrong... one of the various constants is inside the erf function, so the k for the DBS's A3 shield is not the same as the one for the cobra's A4 and so we can't compare the two values directly. Ah well, I always said that a single experiment trumps a thousand pages of formulas
Edit 4: Never mind all my math mumbo jumbo, I just noticed the reason for the difference. Edshipyard is using a base shield strength of 118 for the diamondback, and I bet coriolis is using the same screenshot I was looking at just now, which shows 93.
