E.D should be advertised in newspapers

I work in a small Tesco express, I've been talking to customers about elite and definitely think many 40 years plus fans don't know about it, I feel there less likely to source info on the game using the internet and I've not seen any article in newspapers.

Are the dev team waiting to make a bigger impact?

There was a great article in Edge this month but as the game is still in Alpha a marketing drive at this stage is too early. There are lots of articles on the internet and hundreds of youtube videos which will help to spread the word.

At this point FD should just be much more vocal. Tout each new milestone. Post videos, post press releases, give soundbites.

I personally pulled in 5 people, two bought into beta, one bought into alpha, the rest said they're definitely going to buy at release. None of those guys had even heard about Elite Dangerous before I showed them.

The recent wave of articles in the gaming press is definitely a step in the right direction. When the docking update is done and somewhat stable, do the next push. Get the info out there.

Maybe even try for a bit of a PR stunt, maybe a competition, or add a wiggle-pony figure to the cockpit :)

"I wanted a packet of Rothmans but they started asking me if I was going to be an Elite trader pilot from the 33rd Century"

"Tescos has changed man"

Yeah I know what you mean man!

The other day I was in the supermarket and coming out, they had slapped a parking ticket on my cobra mkII - I had spent too long in the supermarket!

serves you right for taking a classic to the supermarket. Doesn't the Mk III have more boot space for a supermarket trip anyway? Especially if your taking the kids.

Yeah I don't get it.There will be 25 ships in the released game. Assuming you have about 25 weeks (6 months) until release / gamma, you release info about a ship EVERY WEEK and add a story to it so journalists have something to write about. Some flavor. Hell anything that tells a little story and connects to real world.

But nothing??? Maybe there is a reason why they are mum about stuff but I don't get it? There is simply nothing new to write about as a journalist.

A 14 year old wanna be intern from high school for free and it would be better than nothing.

who says you do that? Common sense games development is not to design all of the assets first and try to fit a working game around them.

even though im a big gamer, I would feel a little weirded out if a Tescos Express employee started chatting to me about Elite when I only went in there for some milk and a loaf of bread.

Neither do you have the artists sitting around idling until everything else is finished.

It is expected an advertising campaign on all major highways on the five continents

Well this 40 years plus fan definitely knows about it and his been waiting patiently for it for years. ;) Cant wait to get my hands on the premium beta. :D

I would love to see a big advertisement on a billboard somewhere. A big one on the entrance to the Science Park would be an ideal location. :)

Creating concept art or even candidate assets is one thing, what I mean is the traditional approach is not to hand those out to the public as being ready for the game. Frontier are probably trying to avoid having to do huge amounts of re-work and they probably want to avoid public scrutiny on assets that aren't finalised. They will make those ships available but (speaking as someone who has worked in a game studio as a developer) I can see why they aren't releasing everything yet. I know a certain other big space game is taking a different approach and it will be interesting to see how much redesign work takes place on those ships as that game progresses through development.

Redesign could actually be an interesting part of the story. People would compare how the design changed during the process.
Could even make a magazine feature about the past and future elite ships, comparing the old and new ship designs.

I started a similar thread months ago (http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7449), because I felt that Star Citizen got more attention than it deserved compared to Elite Dangerous.

It is probably not of any statistical value but I recently met two guys online, on separate occasions, of my age (ancient+) who had no idea Elite Dangerous was in the making. They were so unbelievably happy when I told them as they were true Elite fans of old.

It seems many older guys do not tend to follow the news on gaming sites like I do. So they just never encountered any coverage on the subject.

For me personally, having been a gamer all my life, the advent of Elite Dangerous is the most important thing in gaming I can think of. I feel there are many more true fans out there who have no idea what great things are happening right now.

Well in my opinion Frontier are being a little more strategic with their resources to avoid having to redo large amounts of work, they seem to be concentrating on the game logic first and designing their fancy ships to fly in the game universe they actually have. Anyway we actually do get a steady stream of 'peeks' at new assets which are increasing as the game-world grows. We have recently seen a close up of the Cobra interior and we are about to see Space-Stations in game for the first time.
