E:D vs SC - some impressions

I know Elite : Dangerous and Star Citizen are vastly different in scope and completion level, but I think it's still worth comparing them.

- the HUD and cockpit I think is vastly superior in ED. I love the color palette, the cockpit design, the HUD, the effects when you're taking damage. In SC the radar is too obtrusive as are some target effects (the target acquiring graphics, etc.). The bluish tint on the HUD may be realistic but it's dull.
- The 'target arrow'. Too obvious/cartoony in SC, too absent in ED. Some sort of target pointer would be very useful for those of us without TrackIR. Constantly glancing at the radar is difficult.
- sound wins in ED hands down. When I fired my lasers in SC, they sounded so wimp it's impossible not to be disappointed (I got the 300i, maybe other ships have better-sounding weapons). The engine roar and many subtle aural effects really shine in ED.
- ship handling is better in SC. Initially I played both of them with mouse. ED is pretty much unplayable with mouse. SC maps pitch/yaw on mouse and it feels a lot better. Pitch/Roll with mouse in ED feels wrong and don't get me started on yaw. I understand stylistic decisions but this is dumb. With a joystick some of the differences go away but inertia and handling still feels better in SC. Don't know if it is a more accurate model, but it feels better.
- Level design: carefully designed, small, confined places vs. the vast empty space. I sure hope the levels get bigger in SC as the 'Broken Moon' looks great but it's tiny. Given the huge difference in hardware demands, I'd say the Elite devs did a great job. Can't wait for more content though (shipwrecks and surprises).
- Ship design: I don't know how all Elite ships look like but from what I've seen they kinda feel same-ish. Some more variety would be welcome.

Well...

the HUD in SC is inferior to ED at the moment. Beeing mostly non-functional and also the very first iteration of it do not exspect much of it right now.

The sound is, as far as I know, purely placeholder in the SC AC and Hangar. So nothing to compare here. But ED has superb sound nontheless.

ship handling: is probably the "most complete" part of SC right now as the system is ready and just needs tweaking of thrust output etc. I think SC is onto something great here. ED feels solid, but nothing special. Works fine for what it is.

Level design: well it is an "arena" after all, right? There wont be those confinded spaces in the Persistent Universe when the game launches, so really nothing to compare here either, except for the grapfical marvel CIG is building here (even in pre-alpha)

ship design in ED is classic (at least what I have seen). SC has much more variety. Probably up to personal taste wich of the both you like more. In case of detail however there is no denying that SC has some of the most detailed assets in gaming history.

ok

Let's compare Star Citizen to a packet of space raiders crisps

Space raiders give you all the ships now for 20p
Space raiders has better alien designs.
Space raiders are more fun than Arena Commander in an Aurora
Space raiders come in Beef
Space raiders have better controls
Space raiders exist now as a product you can purchase
Space raiders will exist in 2019 as a product you can purchase.
Space raiders win.

Personally I think the Commodore 64 totally blew the Sinclair Spectrum out the water. Kill the worshipers of the nasty squidgey keyboarded coaster! ;)

Wait! My popcorn is still in the microwave and I need a fresh Pepsi. I like to be comfortable before watching a re-run fight :p

I'm sure people are still on the fence about ED vs. SC as far as which one they will support (if both aren't an option) so threads like this are helpful in that regards but, I wouldn't run into a mosque and start a discussion about Muslim's vs. Christians (or vice versa), It's just asking for a holy war :D

Amstrad, superior to the C64, not true sir, a shocking amalgum of East End wide-boy graphics, permed-hair, gaudy key colours and a faint whiff of boiled beetroot, not pleasent sir, not pleasent at all!;)

What's that you have there Spiggs? Is it some kind of giant bread box? Oh it's a Commodore 64, oh you can just unload that over there.

What's that you have in the other lorry Spiggs?

Oh it's the Commodore 64 disk drive.

Oh you'd better check the council for planning permission before you put that thing down.

Here's Kevin McLoud from TV's Grand Designs. No Kevin, no it's a computer apparently, not a YMCA made out of baker-light.

Now let's put a disk in and wait for it to load.

See you next Thursday!

Good heavens Zeewolf my fine fellow, is that some sort of 5 year olds iteration of a lego battleship that has just hoved into view?

Perhaps its the result of someone pushing the 2001 monolith down several flights of stairs where it unceremoniously smashes into into a bucket full of half melted fruit pastilles.

No what's that you say, Its a black magic chocolate box with the sweets on the outside after they've had all the chocolate sucked off of them.

Well that's mighty inviting Sire. Please allow me to boot up you're Kraken of computing power..... What do you mean it doesn't actually work?

Oh well, back to the abacus for you my friend!

C64 was light year ahead of its time. Look at that Loading Screen for goodness sakes, its positively Paul Smith with 5 cans of Red Bull inside him! :D
