E3 2014: Elite: Dangerous Developer Demo

Actually, automation in the cockpit is becoming a problem, with one recent crash possibly related to pilots not knowing how to actually fly their plane... a scary thought if you plan to fly any time soon.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-...voided-manual-flying-former-trainers-say.html

The new cars I'm looking to buy can park themselves. I don't see them taking reverse parking out of the test though. We join the game after the test... I see nothing wrong with starting in an old banger with no automation and upgrading to one that can park itself.

Teach the players the basics, through making them do it themselves until they can afford the automation, then if it breaks... they'll remember how to save themselves without that automation.

Also.. most IRL pilots start flying in single engine planes with no automation at all. Again, I see no reason why we shouldn't start Elite like that and work up to better gear.

I believe I said as much, have them learn the basics and then, if they want automation, let them use it once able to afford it.

As for the Asiana Airlines incident, it apparently rather comes down to that airline not having their pilots train the manual approach a lot if at all, which, at least in my opinion, is always a bad thing, as you can not count on the automation working flawlessly all the time. When this is the case, you will get sad results like that. It seems that some people just don't think that Murphy's law has any relevance whatsoever, but anything that can go wrong, will go wrong was true, is true and will stay true and you need to be prepared when the brown mass hits the fast rotating blades.

To be realistic, something like the sc drive should be fully autopiloted, with the option to switch to manual at any time. After we've spent weeks supercruising all over the galaxy, the operation, as cool as it all is, is going to become... well rather routine and done by roat[sp], and something that I think most will agree on could really use autopilot - much more imho than docking autopilot... where docking is fun.

You select destination, select desired drop out range, sit back and sight see until the lovely female British-accented computer notifies you of immenent drop out. Quite nice I think... with the emphasis on the option to go manual at any time. Though I fully agree that all pilots, both in real life aviation and ED should learn stick & rudder, seat of the pants flying first.

Early days yet, however expect the SC environment to become somewhat "busy" as the game progress.

There will be things chasing you, you chasing things, things lying in wait - Interdiction message will not always come out of the blue, ways to avoid those things lying in wait, etc.

All of the above will require an alert and fully serviceable pilot - not just a wannabe (auto-pilot). ;)

I would like an autopilot option during SC as well, it's a great time to do other things especially if they introduce in-ship trade computers or other "info review" systems. Have any interdiction or other event turn off autopilot of course.

Another good reason to have new pilots know how to land manually: Subsystems can be shot to pieces. Think of the frustration of having escaped (and maybe won) a grueling battle, craft all but fallen appart, only to hear the lovely lady tell you "Automatic docking not available, susbsystem damaged", the last of your reserve oxygens leaking away while you can only look at the welcoming glow of the station entrance...

Did anyone notice that leaving supercruise was instant, i.e. no 'shaking' cockpit. Hopefully they've ironed out that netcode bug now.

The more releases that they give us, the more impressed I am!

They are using a build running on local in E3...no other players around ;)

Dave said dinosaurs. That's as good as confirmed as far as I'm concerned.

No Mans Sky beat them to it. But then, that's a demo. Everything off planet was cartoon, but they might have some cool tech - I wonder if they'll consider partnering...

Then again FD might have a room full of devs who've put all the Zoo Tycoon assets into The Outsider engine and irradiated the servers to see what pops out after a few million generations 8^)

Space dinosaurs.

Not exactly. David's phrase about "space dinos" have been around for a year if not more, long before NMS reveal.
