E3 2015 speculations for Elite

So, Mr Braben has answered some questions in an AMA session, with the highlights being that the 10% taxation on modules is being retracted (to be implemented soon though), the Diamondback Explorer (which is a different ship) making an appearance soon and that there is going to be Elite news in the upcoming E3.

That last point made me wonder and I would like to share that speculation with you: That last revelation + the fact that Mr Braben avoided answering every question about future expansions maybe means that the news at E3 this year for Elite will be the about the first payed expansion.

Do you guys think that is a strong possibility or will this revelation maybe take away from his unveiling of a new game at E3 so he would avoid it?

Yeah I think it'll be New Game as the main attraction and an announcement of the name and key features of the next update, which I hope will be one of these rumored and mysterious Expansions.

That's a huge jump in speculation. He didn't answer questions about future expansions because his Q & A was all about Powerplay. Frontier will probably be releasing a new game at E3 and also Xbox players will be coming online around then. Let's cut out the 'what ifs' and deal with what we know.

I think he hinted at big things to come in his reply to "What do you think the game will be like for new and existing players in 12 months time?" by saying "It will be great! ;)" Generally the cheeky wink is used to put emphasis on upcoming plans.

They've announced a new IP, dunno what it is. Maybe a pure VR experience? I couldn't say but I doubt they will be releasing a game on the magnitude of Elite: Dangerous. We'll definitely see an announcement of what the next paid expansion will be which I honestly think will be planetary landings and planetary combat as well as Thargoids(As a free update a la Powerplay). Free roam walking won't be in the expansion I don't think... It's a totally different level of play to what's in the game currently so it's not small feat even if the game has been developed with it in mind.

No, I read the AMA posts and DB responses and the I take from that; both the new game (and) Elite information will be given. I assume, due to the original 'Kickstarter'/Expansion timeline statement we'll hear much more at E3.

I thought the E3 would be the Xbox One debut, and showing off Powerplay. Can't imagine there'll be any other significant announcement for the base game.

I suspect we will see a few prototypes of stuff like character creation tools, and some mock ups of internal station designs, a rough DLC release date. A sneak peak of Thargoids or may be some other aliens like the Trumbles will also happen. May be some of the final 11 ships they are working on will be shown off. Probably an Alpha version of Elite Dangerous running on Xbox One, a trailer for that. I hope comets make an appearance, the universe need comets.

There would have to be information about the expansions at E3; It's so close and embedded in the 'Kickstarter' timeline.

Well, they have to announce Powerplay proper anyways especially given it has not seen the public light yet and it is still in beta, so I d imagine Powerplay will be the main feature wrt Elite in E3 tbh.

If there is anything additional to do with expansions I d imagine it d be in the shape of a very minute sneak peek.

Well, even a very minute sneak peek would be better than nothing! :)

As for the 1st expansion, I would agree that planetary landings would be perfect, but I have my reservations about this coming out before the end of 2015.

To be fair he avoided many questions but you didn't notice them as you were fixated on expansions.

For example: No mention of why PP was introduced which seemed to a deviation from the "vision" he pitched a few years ago. I am fixed upon this aspect so noticed that he avoided it and personally didn't pay any attention to expansion questions. (As to me I couldn't care less about planetary landing or EVA - not my thing - so much to implement first otherwise you simply double the landscape of limited things to do : Enrich the game first before you expand :p)

Well it was a PowerPLay AMA, not an general ED AMA. Expansion questions were technically off-topic.
