E3 Elite HD prototype performance

It's been said that the ED HD rift demo at E3 was running on SLI gtx770's. It's also been said that it was running on a 780ti.

If it was gtx770's anyone that got to try it know if there was any lag or stuttering? I know there is supposed to be potential issues with SLI and the OR but I seriously doubt Frontier would have used this setup if it was an issue in ED.

So two things:
1.which gpu configuration was it?
2. If it was gtx770's did it suffer and performance issues at all?

Yeah, I'd like to know this. I got a GTX 770, and I need to know if I'll be alright, need to buy a bigger card, or just go SLI (another 770).

I'm not sure if the E3 build is different, but I thought Crossfire/SLI was not enabled so far, and using multiple cards actually decreased performance.

Maybe it's been fixed? I haven't used multiple cards since the 6600 days.

Yeah it has been posted somewhere.

I think you'll need at least a 760ti to get smooth framerates in a HD rift right now. At the moment the lowest framerates are experienced inside stations, which incidentally is where the HD oculus really shines the most.

I have a 660ti and that produces "acceptable" framerates inside the station with the HD oculus, even though it's not completely smooth. I don't know how much optimizations are going to help there, I hope they can improve this quite a bit.

Would you mind sharing exactly what frame rates you get inside the station, and what the games settings are?

On my DK1, I set Elite to 1920x1080 and max settings and I get around 25fps inside the stations. This is on a GTX 780, and i5 2500k.

I just got word from someone that was at E3 and, outside the dev team probably has more ED time on the HD prototype than anyone, don't know if they're supposed to say publicly, so I'll not name them, when asked if there was any lag or stuttering with the SLI GTX770 the response was quote; "No it was a silky smooth 75fps :D", which is spectacular news for those of us with SLI 770's.

The DK2 of course is a bit different than the HD prototype but, it gives me hope I may not have to drop another $700 for a gpu upgrade. :D

Happy birthday to me!

The thing is I know who you are talking about and I think they were either misinformed or don't remember correctly. When I asked they weren't 100% sure.

The HD prototype that they used at E3 for E: D does not have a 75hz refresh rate. It has a 60hz refresh rate so it cannot have been running at 75FPS (well it could have but it wouldn't have made a lick of difference).

Secondly there are some issues relating to SLI/Xfire configs that do introduce some latency. It is advised by Oculus to run the game on a single GPU if possible, if you've already got dual GPUs though they are fine, just not optimal (as they introduce about 1 frame of latency and any latency is bad for VR).

Not trying to get at anyone but misinformation isn't good when people's expectation may be affected by them.

It would have made a difference in that it would have been a worse experience at 75fps than it would have been at 60fps (tearing)! :p

Vsync might have been on but that introduces more latency. Many people don't like Vsync due to input lag. If you notice input lag on a normal monitor it'll be ten times worse in VR.

No doubt the HD prototype experience was awesome.
The DK2 experience will be better is most ways (except the slight reduction in resolution).

I think I read in another thread that the HD prototype had separate 1080p screens for each eye. That might explain the twin 770s - one for each screen. This would be a lower latency, higher resolution configuration than having one very high res screen shared between both eyes and using SLI.

Right now it's all a bit hard to guess and bleeding edge. I think there are two options:
1. Patience grasshopper. Decide how to upgrade your graphics when CV1 comes out. Things will be cheaper/more powerful/better optimised by then.

2. Do it now. 770 or 780 with DK2. Enjoy the next 12 months but after that you may need to invest again to run CV1.

David Braben said they ran the e3 oculus demo on a Titan .
Source: the register live chat of two days ago.

He did not say that.
He said "The Titan gets 75 fps on a dual 1080p display on a DK2. Further optimisations will come, so yes that will help a good deal."

They had a HD prototype at E3 100% confirmed.
FD have had access to a DK2 when a Oculus rep dropped by with one. They implemented the DK2 required code then, they tested the DK2 then.
The rep took the DK2 with him. 100% confirmed by the photo of DB wearing it and playing the game and comments made by the Oculus rep in question.
This could be what that quote above from DB relates to.

They may have a DK2 now as Oculus have said they've sent some DK2's out early to certain devs (no names given). This can't be confirmed due to probable NDA or they just don't have one yet (like 99% of the devs that have pre-ordered).

Ah, I guess I don't notice input lag then as I generally run everything with vsync on (unless benchmarking/testing of course) as I definitely do notice tearing and don't like it, especially on the Rift.

Kerrash said it was indeed HD prototype they had there. So they demoed on OR HD, not previous version.

It does not. Misinformed people saying things they don't understand.
The HD prototype used a single screen (just like the DK2 does) split in two just like every prototype Oculus have shown (they may have dual screen prototypes but they certainly haven't shown them in public).

Dual screens is not planned as far as I'm aware but since nobody knows anything about CV1 I can't say for sure.

I would advise waiting and seeing when your DK2 arrives and if required upgrading, no point jumping the gun.

I used to get it when I first setup my PC and remember playing Battlefield 3 and it not feeling right, like there was a delay when turning. Was like my PC was drunk :)
You do learn to compensate though.

Can't get much more informed than first hand experience. There's a ton of opinions and rewrites of information so I went to someone that has actually tried it. I'll have first hand experience come August, hopefully. As of now this person is the only person I know that can actually speak specifically to the HD prototype running ED @ E3.

Could he have been wrong about it being dual 770's? Sure. Could it have been a titan? Sure but, as I already have 770's in SLI I'll hold out hope.

I'm not trying to miss lead anyone, the opposite in fact. Again, the closer to actual experience with the HD prototype as I can get is most likely factual as opposed to speculation.

So, anyone reading this, proceed at your own risk. I for one give more weight to first hand experience as opposed to speculation.

It could have been SLI 770s.
I'm not saying that it wasn't just that when I asked he said he wasn't sure.

Oculus are saying SLI/Xfire is not ideal. If I'm going to believe anyone it's the people that make the thing.

I'm trying to do the same thing, correcting misinformation and providing the information I've gained while living and breathing the Rift since the DK2 announced (and a little bit before then) ;)
I've read every thread of note on the Oculus official forums and I'm hanging about r/oculus as much as I do the E: D forums as Oculus staff post there often. See a few familiar faces there too like Zeewolf.

Can you give me direct quote for that? I am researching this and this is quite important, as I hope to get OR some day down the road.
