Newcomer / Intro Eagle - gimballed pulse lasers firing sporadically?

Hey there ! So I want to do some bounty hunting and I got myself an eagle and fitted it with 3 gimballed pulse lasers.

All good, except one problem : they do not fire.

Better said: they fire if I set them into "straight fire mode". I.e. I can shoot them straight up when I hit my fire button and all is dandy. So it means my power management is fine, my groups are fine.

The tracking mode also appears to work just fine. However, when I use the free for all mode - which is the one that is supposed to track the target automatically and shot as fast as possible - well, in this mode the lasers do not shoot no matter how much I mash my mouse button!

What am I doing wrong?

Are you talking about gimbaled weapons or turrets? Turrets can only be fired manually when in the forward fire mode, otherwise they fire automatically depending on the targeting settings.

On my ship it says "Pulse laser (G)" with a little turret icon on the top right side.

Even if they are turrets - why do they not fire when I set them to "targeted enemy"? I assume the correct procedure would be to select my enemy through the G or T key and have him locked. Then, when I press left click (all 3 weapons bound to group 1), the turrets should start tearing my target down. But in practice - nothing happens

If you do not have direct fire controle on them (other than in the "straight fire" mode), they must be turreted weapons. The "G" in the name might be a glitch. It usually stands for "gimballed", but your weapons clearly don't behave as "gimbaled" weapons.

I would advise going back to the outfitting menu, and changing them into proper gimbaled weapons.

On another topic, if you want to use turreted weapons on a ship, it is advised to keep at least one direct fire weapon, so you can engage in combat with your target.
If your target is not hostile to you, and does not fire at you, your turrets won't open fire even when bound to a fire group.

Turret weapon only fires at RED targets, whitch means you need to let the other ship(s) fire upon you and hit you before they will fire....
In other words, if you only have turret weapons, you'll have a hard time picking a fight yourself... unless you are in a Conflict Zone and picked a side to fight for... or like me have killed so many pirates that there local faction have become "hostile" to me both in SC and when I meet them at my local RES

Btw the "G" is just a type of rating of weapons, like F2 multiguns or even A-graded Powerplant ect.

The "G" is the weapons rating (a useless statistic in my opinion).

Is the enemy you targeted actively hostile? Has it fired on you?

Thank you all, I suppose I did indeed have 3 turret lasers installed. Since my enemies are pirates that are normally yellow when I target them, my turrets refuse to fire on them.

Which is still very odd, because if I "tag" he pirate with direct fire and he becomes red to me, then my turrets should pick him up and start firing at him. But this does not happen!

Oh well, looks like it is time to outfit with proper gimballed weapons. To be honest, this turret behaviour seems buggy to me. Why shouldn' I be able to give a command through my ship computer to target "that anaconda over there" as opposed to the current game logic, in which a turret does nothing because the target is yellow? And on top that, nothing happens when I manually "tag" the target with direct fire and they are red to me...

EDIT I made a screenshot of the weapon I have installed. http://i62.tinypic.com/2ni8whd.png . Sorry, it is in german, but it is easy to see what it is :)

That little symbol left whitch looks like a little turret tells you that it indeed is a turret weapon you've got... The fixed weapons has that target-cross like thing and gimballed has something that looks like two rings 1 horizon and 1 vertical.... So ther should be no doubt about what kind of weapon you've got...

Btw.. I would buy 2 gimballed burst lasers and 1 turret multigun on the top of my Eagle if I were you...

Yeah, it's really annoying. Weapons have F and G ratings, which none of other components have. And the F and G mounts, so you have your F/F lasers, G/G, F/G, G/F !!#$@~!/WTFBBQ lasers and eleventy seven other ratings that I have to individually select and try to figure out which one is which.

I outfitted proper gimballed weapons and now they behave as expected.

I agree that the icons, power rating letters and so on take some time to get used to.

Still I do not understand why my original 3 turrets refused to pick up fire on the red targets. Any ideas?

I've learned that not all "red" targets can tricker the turrets, if the targets havent actually hit you ship yet then they will not fire... Red ships can apperently just mean that the ship comes from a hostile faction to you and only after they hit you will your turrets engage...

This I think is a bad programming from Fdev's side since you can't see any difference between the "red hostile faction belonging"(turrets wont fire) and the "red hostile ship"(the turrets will engage) they should have made a seperate colour for those two IMO
