Eagle lost forever???

FlannelBeard here...

Spent about ~30 solid hours into the game. I finally, after about 200 deaths and horrendous luck, got 17200 credits. I spent 16,000 credits on an Eagle... great ship...buuuuuuut...

I spent about ~45 minutes in it and, whilst trying to warp out of a trap zone, overheat and die.

I didn't have enough for the insurance. And my Eagle is 100% gone.

The hell? I'd really like to keep my ship, it was a simple stock load out and its GONE. Is this perma death? Not really fair, considering the massive amount of time ive spent just trying to even get 17,000 credits worth...

Economy is extremely tough, I cannot win dog fights, and now I lose my ship permanently...?

I love this game, but damn, is there any slack? Something I'm missing???

Help. Please. Even if its just a "go here do this trade for 20 hours" type of thing... someone please set me on the right path. Sidewinder is pure evil.

Got the beta, too... supposed to come with free Eagle... didnt ever see it.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
As a general rule its not a good idea to fly without enough credits in the bank to cover the insurance payout if you die. Unfortunately there is not a good way currently to see exactly how much that is. It depends on whether you will just take a stock replacement or want your equipment back as well.

As for getting the eagle with beta, that will be for the finished game. Depending on your backing level you'll get one or another starting ship as an option when beginning.

Don't worry about it. Just trade up to a hauler, and making that money back will be easy. The price of an Eagle is pretty negligable once you get the hang of making money.

Or, you could to to Freeport and try piracy or gold-hunting.

The initial climb out of the sidewinder is hard. It has also gotten a little harder as beta has gone on with the Devs balancing out some of the payouts on missions and "tweaking" the market.

A good tool for the market is:

Combat takes practice but I can also recommend the gimbled pulse lasers (which I think are Pulse Laser 1 (G)) once you can afford them. Once you have these fly to Eranin 2 and when you are within one light year a "Fedral Distress signal" will appear as a contact. Fly into this and select the "Eranin" side from your right hand menu. Shoot 6 or so bad guys and fly back to ibootis to claim the bounties ... rinse and repeat.

One last thing when you start a session select "solo" so you can practise alone. Don't worry you can join the all group at any time once you are ready.

Assuming you are starting at Azeban City, your best start is to take things like Fruit & Veg to Beagle 2 or Aulin Enterprise and then something like Pesticides back (from Aulin), just do that a few times until you have enough cash to buy more expensive items like metals or minerals.

Tech seems to make the most profit, but is usually expensive and you have to know where to take it to.

The link you were given higher up should help (I have my own rather large spreadsheet with lookup tables and indexes)

The only really boring part is getting from a SideWinder to a Hauler. Even that can be done in a few hours of shuttling goods between I Bootis and Aulin. Once you get a Hauler profits go up exponentially (cargo space is 16 vs 4). You'll be able to afford a Cobra Mk. III within a day of steady trading, and then profits more or less double (36 cargo space vs 16).

Make sure to always keep enough Money for Insurance and another load of goods.

get in your sidewinder, go get fish from iBootis Chango dock, fly to Aulin, sell fish, pick up some high tech item..

I could tell you what but what's the fun in that

Sell said item, repeat a few times, and you'll have the cash to buy the eagle easily.

If you can't work out when to sell and buy, drop me a PM...

It took you 30 hours to make 17,200 credits? You can make that in 20 minutes in a Sidewinder. Look for floating containers near "Unidentified Signal Sources" in Anarchy systems. Sometimes it's gold. You'll be back in the Eagle in no time! ;)

Careful, though. More often than not these gold caches are guarded traps. So, quickly grab a couple of containers and be ready to hightail it outta there once other ships show up on your scanner. And be sure to keep your heat signature as low as possible near stations when hauling salvaged cargo. It's illegal and you don't want to be scanned by security with that stuff in your hold.

you are missing a few tricks, but the posters before have given about every sensible answer possible, so all i can tell you is heed them ^^

have fun, too =)

Indeed, it seems like you've been moving toxic waste or collecting bounties in the conflict zones. I can't imagine anything else that would pay so little and cause you to lose so many ships.

Just head over the LP 98-132 and pick up random cans of gold in the unidentified signal sources (run from any npc, skip the non-gold containers). Sell them on the black market in Freeport there and buy an Eagle after 5-10 minutes of this. One run of gold should pay for it, though you might want to do it twice for insurance reasons.

If you really need a hand, toss me a friend invite and I can roll with you a bit if I'm on at the same time. My name in game is cmdr Hrothgar.

First of all I want to apologize for last night. I was extremely frustrated last night and I let that show. It's demoralizing to spend so much time into something and have naught to show for it.

As it turns out, 5 hours after making this forum post (dying more... dropping back to 1k) I decided to go to LP 92 132 (i think is the name) and force myself to hunt gold. Took an hour and about 10 unidentified sources to find it... got 4 in my sidewinder and then died to pirates.

Gritted my teeth and kept going... got 3 gold canisters before the pirates showed and hauled ass. Rinse, repeat... 30 minutes later I had about 23-24k, bought a hauler.... long story short I now have ~55-64k stocked up for little to no effort hunting gold. Now that I finally have my bearings, some steady cash and confidence I will start learning tech trade routes.

It'd take an hour to reply to everyone here, but I read through everyone's response and want to say a giant THANK YOU for receiving my frustration and helping me out.

Not new to space games (descent, freespace, etc) but ED was giving me a rough time! Lots of fun though and it looks like the community is extremely friendly.

Once more, thank you all so much. Love the spreadsheet and guides you all sent - its all book marked.

Much love for you all and the community at ED,

Nice recovery, you'll look back and this will be one of your more amusing memories in the very near future.

Too long in the seat, take a snickers with you next time commander.

Welcome to Elite dangerous, hope to see you out there.

As far as money making goes, gold hunting in LP-98-132 is about the best you can do right now. I don't know about anyone else, but apparently there's a bug in the commodities market. Virtually every system I visit has exactly zero commodities for sale, and the few stock they do have barely fills my Cobra's cargo bay, and nets a whopping 90 credit profit.

I'm not fond of playing the pirate, but it's the only way I can make a living within the game at the moment.

I noticed that too - doesn't seem right. Most likely a bug.

Switched from mouse and keyboard to xbox 360 controller... eagerly awaiting my Hotas until it ships in. The 360 controller has no ease... you aim up and immediately youre aiming up at full speed... I'm hoping I can be as precise as a mouse with my hotas. So pirating at this very second is not my forte... cant hardly aim fluidly.

Can anyone confirm this? I hope it makes sense.

The first time this happens it should be a learning experience. Do not rush into another ship. Make sure that you have enough credits left over after buying a ship to cover the insurance. Also make sure you do not put your entire bank balance in your cargo hold.

Once this happens to you it should never happen again as you have felt what the loss feels like.

You may have bound the axis of the controller to digital rather than analog. Basically, there are two input methods for most movement controls: one binds two inputs to direction A and Direction B, such as pitch up/down, move left/right, and so forth, and the other just binds an axis, usually with options for a sensitivity and deadzone below it, I believe? Whenever you have something with analog movement, as in joystick/HOTAS stick movement, or controller thumbsticks, you want to bind them to the axis rather than the split controls.
I can't say for sure, because a controller is the only input method I haven't tried, (although I am considering it, I have been away from my HOTAS longer than I expected, and a controller is set up right next to me) but the problem you described sounds to most likely be this.

Alternative way for Sidewinder. Go to Nav point and chase after Haulers. They will spill some coffee and beer. If you are lucky they will have tobacco and slave.
