well, they could have read it off the wikipedia, which reported an estimate of 26kly.
but yeah, saint braben, the dragon and all that.

note i'm quite ignorant in astronomy, but it would seem from this that the stated previous estimate of 27.7kly didn't have much consensus.
So, FDEV went on with the greater consensus from the beginning, there were some newer observations that implied bigger distance and now most recent observations brought the estimate back to previous level.
No reason to get hyped about in any direction.
And no reason for cheap digs at FDEV or people who still like the game.
my previous comment might have been a dig, but it wasn't cheap, nor was it aimed at people who still like the game. that would include myself, actually. it was more aimed at people who like to make quick baseless assumptions driven by emotions or personal sympathies. which ... might on occasion include myself too, but not this time.
