Easiest way to make a full system scan

I've gotten into the habit of travelling to the navigation station to scan the whole system to sell on the information but I have noticed sometimes but when I'm pointing at the Star at the centre of the system it's starts identifying all the objects in the system until I've got a full system scan now I'm not sure whether it's because I'm pointing at the star can anyone clue me up about what's happening there and how to get a full system scan in the easiest possible way

Your scanner will automatically resolve bodies close enough to your ship, and you'll need to use the FSS to resolve those further away (or fly to them, of course). To get a full system scan, most people would consider that to include surface scanning also, so you'll need a surface scanner. To surface scan, you need to fly to each body and probe them (that's what takes the time, but also what can earn the money).

The "honk" reveals any planets which other commanders have previously discovered in the system. They will still be "unexplored" to you until you run the FSS on them, but you will be able to see them in the nav panel, on the system map and on the supercruise radar.

The only other ways to obtain a "quick" system scan is with inhabited systems: either stop at the navigation beacon and scan the beacon, or purchase the data from the galaxy map while docked at a starport in an adjacent star system. Note that you cannot sell system data obtained by either of these methods, and it doesn't earn you any exploration rating points.

I've been scanning the navigation beacons whilst system hopping and selling data to other systems. Are you saying the data in selling hasn't come from the nav beacons?

Correct. The data you're selling is probably coming from other scans you are running (including the passive scan of the star when you arrive in-system and any planets you happen to fly up to within 28 Ls of).
