Easily implemented atsmopheres - arid desert planets

As per title, surely an easily implemented first step for the much wanted atmospheres would be arid waterless worlds. Since these arid worlds only have the layer of gas and ambient occlusion to model, which they already model for ELW/s and gas giants (fly around one in supercruise) they could borrow those parts of the existing games code.

I am pretty certain I am not alone in this but I personally think it would be cool to zoom about in an SRV and see a sunrise / sunset with the ambient occlusion and a coloured sky. Even if there wasnt a single cloud in the sky. Not having moisture and therefore clouds & weather featured drastically reduces the complexity of the environment model required. Thus making it easier to implement, and it would be a much appreciated by the players really big bone to throw at us if in season 3 we could get some sort of simple (arid) atmospheres and development wise it would give FD a good starting point for fulfilling the dream of full on meteorological functional atmospheres.

Even something as rudimentary as shrouding the surface of some planets in translucent gas as used to model nebulae's would add some feeling of depth to the universe.

I imagine that atmospheric planets like that might indeed be the first to be implemented.

That would be awesome.

I guess also if it were to be implemented in-game it would probably be under the guise of a new development in atmospheric shielding that can just about cope with arid planets or something due to simpler atmospheric composition...

In any case, I'd love to pilot my ship down to the surface of a desert planet as the sun was setting.

I believe issues regarding the implementation of atmospheric planets is much more related to realism and physics than environmental modeling.

Just pay attention to the time you spend right now to land on a planet.
If you put atmosphere, you will need to enter slower to avoid burning. That is right, burning.
Your ship will see the friction affect against the atmosphere gases, and to avoid burning you need to slow down.

There is a space sim called Evochron, which I used to play the Mercenary edition. Blew my ship coming in and out atmospheric planets a few times due to impatience.

No one wants to spend 10 minute to land on a planet, although this timing is still incredibly faster than real life.

Got to say,it wouldn't be an issue to me if it took 10 minutes to land on a planet.... even longer. As long as the rewards and immersion are worth it. We can't expect to go "zing, zing, zing" everywhere, like some god. We really need to have a landing on atmospheric planets that is a reflection of real life (note I said reflection!) and that takes skill and caution to complete safely, without of course, it being a game breaker.

I agree with you.

To me spending the time to land wouldn't be an issue as long as there are things to see and to do. Like visiting cities, driving around, flying around.
I needs to be more than what we have now in the non-atmosphere planets so we get some reason to stay around at the planet for a while.

Well, we wont realy have typical reentry anyway. We can frame shift past burn in phase. That can make reentry like it is on barren plants but maybe with some flame/burn effect.
