Easy fix for Open mode...

You know, just because my ship is called after a whale, I don't consider myself one :)

But regarding the whole 'grind'...

The only thing I ever unlocked in elite that was a real grind was the superpower rank for the cutter/corvette. That was bad. Its basically flying back and forth between two stations for a day or two. Its the only way.

Engineers? When they were added I ignored them, that was when engineering commodities was still a thing. A few month after that was changed I decided to give them a second chance, and unlocked and G5ed half of them in a single day. I had to earn a permit for two systems and deliver a few rounds of rares but everthing else was already there. I never cared for the whole 'god rolling' thing, and the mats for a single G5 here and there just pile up over the time. Nowaday my mat storage is almost complety full and I have 30 G5ed ships. No grind required for that, I just pick up what I find on the way.

The guardian stuff: That was a really nice experience. I just started a small expeditin out there. Made a sightseeing tour around a few different guardian sites. Made hundreds of screenshots. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Came back the next day and unlocked half of the guardian stuff. I had a good time out there.
When the Guardian beacons were added, I did the same again. Now I have unlocked everything except the PP and distro (I don't want them) and still got plenty of guardian mats left.
I would really apprechiate if the add more of this.

I agree. Add more stuff. Like a vanilla flag maybe? ;)

I can see how this would be a "good idea" but then that would mean that the meta would never change. There would always be that one meta for pvpers and would be an option that only the miners/explorers would use. pvpers would only go to gank once in a blue moon. I wonder if the miners/explorers would even be bored of this simply bc they would one have one meta for all their stuff as well.

So you don't believe that new/casual players would want to interact in a more level game world?

I never said that at all. Why would you assume that?

A level playing field would be nice. But if thats what you want then you need to make all guns with same dps or just have one type of gun for all ships to use for pvp/pve. That's a level playing field. Even with this proposed idea from the OP. This "level playing field" has its unbalance. It would have one meta for pvp and one for pve. Doesnt sound very balanced to me.

I wrote more level, meant to decrease the disparity via a simple toggle.

You can't seem to comprehend that a cargo ship with a cargo loadout being a threat to a combat ship means that if it was outfitted for combat would completely nullify your rather shortsighted idea.

Because if it's one thing cargo ships are known for, it's not having any internals, yeah?
You just can't seem to break from the idea that specializing for combat exclusively means, and only could conceivably ever mean, having a crapload more health than normal. Why should it? Other professions risk dying, yet specializing in them means having gear that gives you new ways to earn money, or gear to earn money more efficiently. Why should specializing in combat ONLY mean having an order of magnitude more health than normal?

If defense internals were restricted to military slots (and ships tweaked a bit to make sure everyone has at least some), do you honestly want me to believe that the T9 would suddenly become equally practical and efficient to use as a bounty Hunter or CZ farmer? Do you really think the FDLZ would suddenly become useless as a combat ship because you no longer can stuff it to the gills with more HP? Are you honestly incapable of seeing "specialized in combat" as anything other than "filling every available slot with HP, and that's it"?

A week ago I entered the Elite Dangerous "vanilla" zone with my alt (Yes such a thing actually exist). No one here is engineered. Only stock ships and a limited selection of such. I had to reset my save to get access. It's the starter zone made for pilots federation beginners.

Point: If you want a non engineered zone that isn't CQC, it's here (there).

Cheers

Alas we kissed goodbye to sensibly balanced PvE and PvP with the released of Engineering... End of really. It'll never be undone now.

The only other hope is fighter based gameplay to be brought into the core game so you can holo-me into fighter based combat scenarios, offering both PvE and PvP (eg: for Powerplay or a Community Goal). But I can't see FD bothering to do that (now), given CQC wasn't deemed instead worthy of creating such engaging gamepay by incorporating that effort into the core game.

Your suggestion won't change the situation with your Type 10. A wing of four unengineered A-rated FDL gankers will still likely destroy your ship. My problem with engineering is less about living or dying and more about it turning ED from a somewhat realistic spaceship simulator with decent flight mechanics into a silly arcade shooter with super-weapons and power-ups. My immersion is more important to me than my rebuy, thus my original support for your suggestion.
I wouldnt mind the occasional ganker if I hadnt the useless engineer grind.

I’m glad I didn’t buy in until late 2016. Vanilla sounds dreary as hell.
I would not swap my 1st 6-12 months in ED for anything. It took me over 100 hrs to get to a cobra and was in my sidey for 25.

ED in that period for me was the best game I have ever played..... By a country mile.

It felt the leas compromised by concessions to MP. Over time I realised that I dont really want to play a space MMO. And solo is but a amputated form of the game rather than a proper SP.

indeed which was my point here

In fact when ED launched it really was feature agnostic . Hell we didn't even have wingmates but that was fine because we knew they were on their way. Even when they launched as MP only ibwas ok with it because I followed the DDF and knew what FD had in mind for wingmates..... I was convinced NPC wingmates were on theway.
As the game has gone on the MP feautures have got further and further away .
I knew about the BGS and fully accepted it's MMO like feature but I had no clue the rest of the game would be so multiplayer centric,,,, and why would I have? FD totally gave no hint.
