HI people! I´m an old fan player of Elite and now a beginner in Elite: Dangerous. I´m here to ask a help about de ECM system. I don´t understand how it works. I don´t find a hotkey for ECM. How can I activate it? Thanks. >

I just got one, and it shows up as assigned to a fire group. How do I activate it ? It does not seem to be assignable to a key on my joy stick.

Never used one myself, but if it's like everything else:

Go to the right hand panel, tab along to Fire Groups. Highlight the ECM and press select (whatever it is on your set up) the (1) icon will appear. This means it is activated by using primary weapons. Press select again while highlighted, and the (2) icon will appear, allowing you to activate it by firing your secondary weapons. You may find that, you have to compromise things to use it or set up multiple fire groups.

I tried this to assign it, and got no response. Must have been doing something wrong -- will try again.

you assign it like a weapon either 1 or 2 in the right hand panel... you then have to switch fire groups to bring it up in your hardpoints.... to be honest ive tried ECM but hardly used it.... sold it again

I tried ECM but don´t understand how it works ... what´s the difference to point defense?
Maybe it works automatically like the point defense, so there would be no need to assign it to a fire group.

You don´t need to assign chaff , heat sinks and shield cells to a fire group. I have them on my keyboard.

Point defence is auto , fires ammo at all missiles , mines , torpedoes.....like a turret.....ECM is electronic and only blocks tracker missiles that lock onto your ship by electronic means.... ,no good v dumb fire or mines....... You assign to fire group and hold down the button for max range ,,,,,a bit like using kws....

I tried an ECM once but sold it straight away. It'll only be useful if the missiles are fired at you from far away enough that the ECM can be triggered (which takes valuable seconds) and in 'the heat of battle' I know I'd not use them quickly enough. Perhaps if (when?) we have multi-pilot ships, with a co-pilot handling other duties including defence (or whatever) it'd become worthwhile again. As it is I stick to point defences as they are VERY quick off the mark and I like the colours/sounds when they start firing. It feels good knowing that my ship is protecting me whilst I concentrate on piloting and firing my main weapons.
