ED among best sellers in Steam

Hi, I don´t know if there´s been any other thread pointing this, but I just saw it and felt like sharing here in the forum:

ED Steam Best Seller.jpg

I am very happy to see my fav game there in the good company of other great games. And Horizons isn´t out yet

Yep, seems like a nearly 70% discount was enough to persuade a lot of those that were umming and arring before.
Probably also a small number of people getting a second account :)

All good news anyhow. Get people into the base game in the hopes they like it enough to get into Horizons.

Great to see Elite is up there on sales on Steam, But...

Reading the Steam forums has been the highlight of my day. Amazes me that people don't research, YouTube, and or use the search feature on the forums about games that actually take a few more brain cells then most games to get an understanding of how things work. I used to post on Elite's Steam forums often, but have got sick and tired of the usual Steam trolling replies. But if you want to kill some time, head on over and read some, past my lunch time quickly.

To the few Steam posters that have replied with thanks, welcome to Elite Cmdr's <O

And I just bought the game on Steam 2 weeks ago.... :(

Oh well. Enjoying the game 2 weeks earlier was worth the 30 bucks imo. I've already got 150 hours logged so I definitely already got my moneys worth.

I think the price drop was to encourage new players who after getting the game so cheap are much more likely to buy Horizons, it's a good move and one that is sure to grow the community and sell expansions that help keep ED going for a long time, if each season of expansions is as robust as this one looks to be I think Elite will grow into a massively popular and huge sort of omni game at some point.

It is an amazing price, both on Steam and via FD store. I've told all the guys I know at my flight sim club, who are sitting on the fence thinking about this game, about the sale in the hopes they buy it. I don't fanboi it, I tell them what it's like and why
I continue to play despite that. I have faith that things will get better, maybe not soon, but at some point down the line it will. And it's not that bad now, not really.

I really hope this influences FD to sell Horizons on Steam quickly. I don't expect it to come as a Beta, and really don't have any desire to play in the Beta. 70% of something is always better than 100% of nothing. Free advertising, automatic updates, loyal following, easy 1 stop shopping...................

So, fingers crossed for a Happy Christmas to Mr. Braven and the FD team. And of course to my buying Horizons on Steam :)

True but that's making the assumption that those who would buy it on steam would never buy it on the FD store. I imagine many may see Horizons say from the launcher or when looking for youtube vids/reviews prior to buying and investigate what this Horizons thing is and end up in the FD store.
I mean personally I think it's a great tactic, advertise Horizons extensively, put it in the new launcher so existing players see it. Sell it from your store for the first few months until all the people that would buy it from your store have done so and then get a second wind of sales by expanding their audience.

Reading this makes me wish there was crossplay between the PC and xbox versions.

I believe at some-point there may well be, although that could be many, many years away yet.

There was an old Dev comment before X-box became a thing where they were talking about how the background sim was the same but you couldn't meet in-game. Back then they seemed highly enthusiastic about the idea but it's obviously a nightmare to implement especially with frequent ongoing updates and there will be opposition from players on both sides.
Possibly when we get to the stage of 1-2 major updates per year they may consider looking at it again, possibly also with PS4 assuming that joins the fun and that there isn't a new generation of consoles out by this point :p

Last I heard I thought they do use the same background sim, but that cross-platform players can't meet in game. I understand the desire for it, but I do feel that the PC has somewhat of an unfair advantage potential.

...

I first got the game on Steam earlier this year and have since gotten the Lifetime Expansion Pass when Horizons was first announced. It looks like I'll have to wait for the Steam Keys each year for each season expansion to continue to be able to use Steam though. Kind of a shame and way more needlessly complicated than I'd prefer. See this thread for more info about these issues. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=202994 Hopefully FD will make this a more streamlined process for us Steam users at some point.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed because the Xbox version seems sparsely populated.

Well unless you go to the right areas the pc version can be quiet too. Usually the only really "busy" systems are the community goal ones, the starter systems and the lave cluster. Powerplay HQ's have low-mid player traffic and everything else is decidedly low->barren :p Does give an accurate view of how isolated and huge space is though...

Correct me if I am wrong, that game is just the base game, not horizons which will next year then become the base game I guess. I would think many buying may not know that and so expect some moaning to come.

Still it is good news for FD and for us :)

Oh yeah, Steam forums last night were on fire. Many of the posts could be summed up as:

"I bought this game without doing any research, I don't like it, and now I'm angry"

yeah, but the "buy a game without research"... ok, you can do that. :)

on the bright side: the people who bought this on sale will:

  • bring fresh money to FD (which is good for us)
  • eventually try it out and like the season one
  • eventually get fixed on and are compelled to buy horizons *before* it goes on sale next christmas.

i see a win-win-win here (noob-FD-us)

I just hope there isn't a massive backlash when, imminently, thousands of unobservant new commanders discover that they are not eligible for Horizons.
There are enough people who have played the entirety of season one, who loudly share their feeling ripped off.

I don't quite understand why you suspect all the new players coming in from Steam are going to end up angry that they don't have (and didn't pay for) Horizons?

There's no mention of it on the Steam Store Page and if there are all these suspicions that players are buying without doing research, how would they even know about Horizons prior to paying for, and booting up the game? I suspect the impulse buyers currently picking up the sale aren't even AWARE there's an expansion on the way. Sounds like a situation more warranting of a pleasant surprise, than a rude awakening. To me at least.

If, like most people's experience I think, they get in-game, enjoy the game, then find themselves thinking "its awesome but I wish there was just a little bit more content/polish", they'll then soon find out there's an expansion not even 2 months time away. That was my experience having bought the game a few weeks ago (although admittedly I did a TON of research on the game and the purchase options before buying).
