ED and Oculus Rift

This section of the forums is great. But I am really overwhelmed with the amount of info. I see tons of posts and links, but I just don't know where to start.

I am getting set to buy the Rift and would really like help getting it set up in ED.

Help getting it setup for ED. Help understanding what DK2 is (I see a lot about it. But isn't it old?). General thoughts on if the Rift is a good solution for VR in ED. Are there better or more stable options?

Thanks for any insight.

The DK2 is the second edition of the developers edition of the Oculus Rift. You can still buy it used but they aren't being made anymore. The CV1 is the current edition of the Rift.

The Rift is fine for ED, after you set the headset up you simply start ED up and away you go. The only real setup depends on your computer ability to run the Rift and how high you want to run your settings, The one thing you will want to make sure of is the re-center HMD is bound, I think the default is F12. Pressing the button will reset your view to the current way your head is facing.

One recommendation I can give is to take it slow. If you start feeling queasy when flying or driving the SRV stop until you feel like you can go on. I had some problems with it when I first got the Rift and doing tight turns or spinning made me feel uneasy. I kept pecking at it and soon I could drive or fly anywhere with no issues.

Good luck, and enjoy the best gaming experience you can imagine!

Other headsets currently available are the Vive, Windows MR and the Pimax 4k (the 8k will be out sometime next year).

Don't buy a DK2 under any circumstances . Buy a CV1.

What he said ---^

Don't think you'll find too much difficulty with the set up. The box has good instructions - basically plug in, install Oculus Home and follow configuration guide for calibrating sensors. Go for 2 sensors, much better for reliable tracking.

Playing VR at a low frame rate is not enjoyable, so don't fudge on your computer specs (including the required HDMI and USB connections) - make sure they are really up to VR. Personally, in the real world for ED in VR I think you should at a minimum have an i7 CPU and GTX 1070 graphics card. Not saying it can't be done with less, just not ideal.

Think about your controller. Can't see anything out of game when in VR, so keyboard and mouse are difficult. I find the Xbox controller really good as I know where the buttons are without even looking, but other players love using a joystick. I think you'll need one or the other so add that in to the mix.

I would even say that Voice Attack is pretty much a must for VR because (as you know) there are a lot of controls in game and VA will let you automate most of them and makes playing ED in VR a much more enjoyable experience.

Anyway, that's it in a nutshell and welcome to VR :)

Not necessarily true, I'm playing on a GTX 970 on Medium VR settings and whenever I'm near a station or on the planets surface the Rift is doing what is called Asynchronous Space Warp that essentially locks your frame rate to 45 fps and sends the image to the headset twice. While you get some artifacting at times it doesn't bother me. It all boils down to you. If you're really picky about having very good visuals then you will need a GTX 1080ti and a top notch CPU or the new Samsung MR unit. The third option will be to wait until the Pimax 8k unit is available later next year which has the potential to have the best graphics. of all.

If you can handle the lower graphics then then a lower spec GPU would be quite acceptable. Even with a GTX 1080ti you're not going to get the same quality visuals that you would from a good monitor. For many of us, the VR experience more than makes u
p the lack of visual acuity.

If you're looking to upgrade your GPU then I would suggest something with more than 4 gigs of Vram onboard as my Vram is running maxed out.

Again, your mileage may vary. I have Voice Attack but don't use it. I find that in combat or when I get tired the Voice Attack has difficulty understanding me. It can be a very good program which can add to your immersion.

I have a Radeon RX480 and an I5 6600. Supposed to be an ok setup for VR. I use Voice Attack and HCS already and I just purchased a Hotas a month or so ago!

THIS is the Rift I am planning to purchase. Is it CV1? Only thing I can tell from the description is a release date of August 7, 2017

Yes, that's a CV1 in the touch bundle and comes with two sensors.

Regarding your PC, it's on the low end for VR, so you'll probably find yourself running at low graphics settings. According to this site your GPU falls just below the Nvidia 970 which is the lowest level recommended for VR. When I first got my rift I was using a 960, which is not considered adequate for VR, but I could play, just with very low settings and not terribly good FPS. I upgraded to a 1080, and now have good performance, but that's not a cheap upgrade... VR will not only stretch your PC, but likely your wallet too. ;)

All that said, ED in VR is terrific, completely different experience from playing on a monitor, so hopefully you will enjoy it.

Will do some more research. I have read a lot of reviews on the 480 with Rift and a lot of people say it runs VR just fine.

Here is just one of the links i found where people were running a 480 and a rift.

AMD's website also says a 480 is good.

I may just have to get it and see how it goes.

Yes, you will be fine. :) As I said, I was able to run ED in VR on a 960, just wasn't great quality, and your card is much closer to the 970 it would seem.

Best thing to do is try it, and if you feel the graphics / fps aren't what you were hoping for, then you can always upgrade.

Would love the excuse to upgrade. LOL. Thanks for the input! Rep'd you.

But are they playing ED? ED has some pretty steep requirements for VR. As long as you know that and an upgrade is not beyond the realms of possibilities then I'd say go for it.

I can upgrade my GPU if I really felt I needed to but I'd rather wait for Volta if possible. I think we'll see more about early next year.
