ED and Third Party Tools

Am I the only one who does this?

When I boot up ED for a little fun in the black, I also have running in the background (soon to be on a separate laptop if I ever get my tower back - grrr):

  • EDDB - Very useful in finding out what is at stations, finding planets, working out trade routes and which commodities to sell
  • Inara - Found this invaluable for working out if I really need to scoop up that mat or not
  • Coriolis - Always have this running just in case I need to check if that new module I just saw in outfitting will help or hinder my ship - since FD seems to be against the whole 'try before you buy' thing.

Lastly, I always have a notepad and pen, continuously jotting down destinations, where to refuel, what the mission is, just general crap this befuddled old brain needs. I have lost count of the number of note pads I have gone through playing this game lol

It is a bit of a shame that a game as supposedly all encompassing as ED needs these 3rd Party programs to be made at all, it would be nice if the functionality was not only built into the game but easily accessible. But big kudo's to the people who put the hard work in to create EDDB, Inara and Coriolis, you certainly made ED easier and a lot more enjoyable for me !

add some others. Voice attack, EDDI, edengineer.
you have a journal that notes everything. its located C:\Users\username\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous
multiple screens makes them easily accessible.

Note pad and pencil, the oldest third party tool in the game of Elite.

We don't need the other on-line third party tools; in fact, there are players that refuse to use them at all. But then they read the forums. They are not required, but very useful and lots of kudos to those that put the time and effort, into making them.

I always have Inara up in a tab on my laptop while the desktop runs the game. EDDB and Coriolis have their own tiles, as does this forum, on the Firefox New Tab page for easy access.

And I too have a small mountain of 3x5 spiral memo books and other assorted pieces of paper with interesting and/or needed tidbits of info jotted down on them.

Don't use external tools myself. Never felt the need for them. Well, I do keep various spreadsheets I use to figure things out.

Standard appeal:

If you're using EDDB, please also consider running one of the feeder tools like EDMC on your PC. EDDB only works if a sufficient number of players keep updating the database.

I run EDMC when I am running hither and thither. It's pinned to my taskbar right next to the Elite launcher. Click. Click. Go!

Totally with you on this, you're not the only one! In fact INARA has what...20,000 registered CMDRS now?

All three of the tools you mention are absolutely essential as far as I'm concerned. They make things enjoyable and filter out all the nonsense.

I do not like using external sites at all. Having to alttab out of the game makes for a poor experience I think.

I would love it when a lot of the info we currently need to get from external websites would be integrated in the game.
I feel that information that is needed to play a game should be available in the game.
I also would love a build in cmdrs journal.

There's a lot that could be in game given the lore permits faster than light communications and obvious extreme bandwidth, eg telepresence.

I also have third party tools running on a laptop and my galaxy 8.4, with EDDI and Voiceattack on my gaming PC, the game seems flat without them now.

EDDB
EDSM
Inara
EDMC
EDshipyard
Discord
Plus a large bunch of Spreadsheets/Textfiles & Archives

Without them, I'd be almost blind or lose tons of critical Information. Game is simply devoid of Information and proper Information handling. Stone age.

PS.
I started with Paper/Pencil - but I ran out of Paper rather rapidly. Plus, sorting through it all was quickly becoming a mess.

I have EDMC pushing data to Inara and EDSM, EDDiscovery pulling data from my EDSM account and running on my right most monitor to help keep tabs on estimated system value. My left most screen has a web browser with EDSM, Inara, and my video of choice running.

I also have to open up TrackIR and make sure discord is running for notifications and pings.

Once I have all that going, I then open up Elite and play on the middle monitor.
