ED Audio Levels - Low?

Is it just me or are the ED audio levels rather low? I have to turn the volume way up for ED, far higher than for any other game/application.

In the audio part theres the option to select Normal speakers/headphones, Home cinema, and night mode.

Try those see if it helps

I also found the sound very low when I played the combat demo, but I'll check if it maybe wasn't set to headphones when I get home.

Yeah, fiddled with those; I use headphones and the other options are either just as quiet or quieter still.

I've checked the Windows mixer and there's nothing ED-specific going on in there; ED is just by default very, very quiet. I can of course make it loud enough by cranking up the headset volume but then the audio on all background apps (TeamSpeak for example) becomes painful (thus need to be individually turned down, which becomes a pain).

Indeed, I have to double (from 8-10 to 15-20 on my external amplifier) the sound volume when playing E: D.

Not a problem in itself, except that I'm sometimes in for a very loud surprise when I forget to turn it down again after playing.

I've noticed the scanner to be particularly quiet.
I can imagine quite a few people, especially those without headphones, aren't even aware it makes a sound.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for raising this. The guys from audio asked me to come in here and ask you guys a few questions - see if we can get some answers and help you out!

For those experiencing volume problems, has it become worse since Beta/Gamma 1, or has it always been like that?
Is your audio connected via HDMI, analogue cables, optical?
What is your soundcard? (or graphics card if using HDMI audio)
Are you in surround or stereo?
What dynamic range option do you have enabled in the audio options screen?

Thanks so much!

Ed (and the audio guys)

I had to turn the music down to 50% to get a better balance with the rest of the sounds, but other than that it seems fine to me, on my TV or laptop speakers I don't need any more than 20-25% volume and its crisp and clear.

The TV is HDMI connected. Laptop are built in stereo. I don't use any software or hardware tweaks.

realtek normal stereo speakers plugin jack.
Voice ship sound is low, also in station voices is low as well.
Kind hard to here most of the time.
it has become a little louder in this gamma update but still to low imo.

Yet if i put my setting in night time mode ingame the voice sounds seems a little better.

Hi Edward, thanks for quering this. My issue with sound is different - volume is actually ok, but I get cracking sound there and here. It might be CPU Interrupt (then it is general programming, not covered by sound team), but it might be some spikes in frequency too

Using Creative Tactic 3d headset .. and yes I need to turn up the volume quite a bit. Sound has been worse since Beta 2 ... including crackling static and even losing sound for seconds at a time. The last couple patches though it has been better but quieter. Only crackling and popping (None of my other games do this) and low levels are left for me.

It is plugge din via USB

Hey,

1. I wouldnt say worse, because I think the sounds in the game are awesome, but the volume has gone down all over the board since I at least Gamma 1.0, perhaps the last beta dont quite remember. Especially the volume of the voices has gone down, be that the ships voice, or those on the stations' p.a. systems. But things like the FSD boom are less loud as well.
2. My audio is connected via analogue cables.
3. I have an internal soundblaster z, connected to 4 speakers and a subwoofer.
4. Surround
5. I have the audio option set to Home Theatre at the moment. But I have a hard time hearing the difference between regular speaker setup and Home Theatre setup.

Cheers,

Same here. It's better with latest gamma builds than it was before, but some cracking sound is still here (despite the stable 60+ FPS).

I have no issues with sound at all. Just the annoying high pitched whining of engines, but that is supposed to be like that :)
I got it connected to external speaker system via 3.5 jack on SBZ.
Stereo

oops, maybe I should not have answered because I have no problem

I have noticed the lack of volume also.

Since late Gamma 1

-Is your audio connected via HDMI, analogue cables, optical?
HD Audio cable

-What is your soundcard?
SupremeFX II Impact

-Are you in surround or stereo?
Stereo

Say what? I don't see such an option in the audio settings. Under Dynamic Range settings there is only option for 'stereo speaker/headphones', 'surround' and 'nightime'.

The audio (FX and music) has got much quieter for me since Gamma came out, to the extent that I've had to turn Mumble way down and turn up my overall volume in windows. And it's still not exactly loud. The Windows chime on the volume slider is very loud now!

I'm using a USB headset and internal motherboard sound card. Using the stereo headphones/speakers option in the Audio config (and yes, FX and music are on maximum).

1. Sound volume in E: D has always (that is: since Beta in August) been low in comparison to other programs.
2. Analog
3. Realtek HD Audio
4. Stereo
5. Standard Speaker / Headphone

I have sound effects at 100% and music at 50%.

As I wrote before it is not a real problem, since I can turn up (i.e. double) the volume on my external amp.

I noticed this in beta 1, and no one else thought the same :(

I use a realtek codec - optical output - Dolby Amp - headphones.

Its noticeably quieter in comparisons to my other games, I find I have to turn it down when I come to play on say...Arma
