Elite / Frontier ED has a lot to live up to

Hi All,

For some reason felt the need to share this.

I have got as far in ED Alpha as I can get (many people we be able to hand me a plate I think - below average in frontier terms :)) I can kill Anacondas, hold my own against waves of Feds etc.

While waiting for the next build and area to be tested I started a new commander in FFE3D. Normally I leave the Alliance when the plague starts, following the missions to the Empire and buy an Osprey X (absolutely love that ship, the most fun and flexible ship for me in FFE early on). Yesterday, I decided to stay in the Alliance and ignore the meta-game - got me an Asp by June, so happy.

Just purchased my Military Drive 3 at Gateway for my Asp, still 1MW beam laser ans a few shields- pretty skint so doing the Gateway to Titcan run with occasional courier. Robots to Gateway - my big chance with 70 tons of robots......

Overshot Fortress Saskatoon on a close jump by a couple of AU and everyone wanted a piece of me. Lost 20% Hull, but more fun was losing the auto pilot and scanner  Normally I would reload save game at this point but decided 1.5AU out - give it a go.

My night has been spent getting to Fortress Sasktoon (a couple more wanted some of me with no scanner), and then planetary landing. Whilst I carefully lined up to land at Fortress Sakatoon, looking around I got to watch the sun set (at ctrl F2 rate) behind me. That really is cool, no other game can give me that.

Looking forward to ED and its expansions for more of the same in glorious techni-colour.

FFE is a great game, isn't it? Especially the latest D3D builds by AndyJ :)

I'm sure ED will be absolutely amazing when it's released, but I got a funny feeling I'll still be loading up FFE every so often ;)

Very true Steve as I will still be firing up my old Amigas & STs for a go with the original games too. ;)

And your correct too smiths121, ED does have a glorious legacy to live up to. If anyone, besides Mr Braben (or Mr Bell) was making this game I would have some concerns. There is just no substitute for David's vision when it comes to creating games and the Elite series has always been one very close to his heart. Bottom line? ED will be great! What you have seen upto now is just a hint of what is to come. I am very excited to see what's going to be in the next update.

Yeah I wish AndyJ would work with my to integrate some of the code with my version. Could benefit from a little more glam. I put a lot of work into the sunset and sunrises in my version. The smooth transition to space ect... My version was a lot more about making the game look better, his was to fix bugs, could have been a good marriage.

I downloaded it to try over the weekend, had played original Elite but not this one. Couldn't get the sound to work so i gave up, probably because i didn't instal it on the C drive so somethings got lost i assume, might go back and investigate a bit more.

There's a big thread some where on here about how to get the game to work on your machine. You'll have to dig around a bit though. I think the mods consolidated all the FFE3D threads all into one awhile back.

If you like original Elite more than the sequels, give Oolite a try.
