Those 2 sentences. Indeed.

For someone like me who's waited his entire life for VR to arrive there is no way in HELL I'll wait another 5 years for it to be 4K ready.
Who cares anyway? VR is not about crystal clear crisp image... it's about an experience.. about presence.. about not sitting behind a desk, but actually being somewhere.

I spent probably around 2K getting myself setup for Elite, the moment I saw it was coming.

I bought a Rift, bought an X55 Saitek set, got clamps to attach them to my desk, bought the first GTX980 G1 on Amazon I could find and upgraded all other components I needed to, just so I could sit in a bloody spaceship.
I don't mean sit behind my keyboard starring at a screen pretending to fly a spaceship.... I mean sitting in the captain's chair.. looking down on my Shoulder Patch, my spacesuit and seeing that damn Clipper nearly nick my right wingtip as I dodge it's desperate attempt to drive it's nose through my hull.....

'Screen door' say ye? I see no screen door.. I'm too damn busy Fighting a Galactic Fight of Survival!

5 years ago I didn't dream I'd still get the chance to do this. VR seemed dead.
Today it's alive and kicking... if it gets better that's awesome! But I remember with great fondness the first Voodoo 3D fx card I got and how awesome Heretic and Duke Nukem 3D looked at the time.. These games didn't have 4K or anything near modern Resolutions, but I loved playing them anyway.. tinkering with the settings to get the best out of it.

That's how I feel today. I LOVE it... and no amount of Pixels can change that. If that's not for you... don't even bother posting here, because everybody here is here because we are Thrilled by every second we spend looking through the Screen-door into a whole different universe, where we are captains and you are just bounty!

:p

Another shameless addict! Nice!
My only criticism with your obsessive and recklessly expensive setup is the lack of a 2nd 980!

I've the slot empty and ready to go, PSU is upgraded, CPU was upgraded and I already installed fans.
Just as I was getting ready for the 2nd 980 prices went up as it was in such demand and low production quantities... (I paid 550 for the first one, but prices currently are way over 600).
Thus I'm trying to find a good deal/bidding option and saving up as I wait :)

but trust me it's coming!!!! NOTHING WILL STOP ME FROM CONQUERING THE UNIVERSE!!! ... sorry I lost it there for a sec...

I reckon they'll be giving 4k headsets away free!

Buy 2 x 990Ti Black Turbo cards (or whatever then next gen of cards will be called) and a get a free 4k headset. The cost of the cards to drive such headsets will be so expensive they'll be giving the headset away free!

Scan had a reference 980 for 399.99 a couple of weeks back - I shoulda taken the plunge! I want reference as that's what I've already got and it blows hot air out of the back. I was kinda of thinking that was the start of the price going down but it was not to be. Paid 429 for the first one. STILL waiting for nvidia's promised VR Sli driver too.

Perfectly summed up for me +1

Love those saying not spending the money on a DK2 for it to be thrown away x years later and in the next post stating they bought x GPU that will lose 1/2 its money within a year :)

I have had my DK2 from 1 month after release and so far I have had many many months of gaming bliss from it in iRacing and ED. Not even scratched the surface with other games. I have most definitely had my £300 worth already

^^This. After 90 seconds in the cockpit, I stop noticing the screendoor and anything else. I wish I could figure out a way to get headtracking working with the original EverQuest. To hell with resolution - it's all about immersion and the experience.
